What happened to the lights?

I've noticed that more recent trailers don't have the three amber lights in the center that were quite common some years ago. For example, compare this 1967 http://www.airstreamclassifieds.com/...26-colorado-3/ to this 2016 http://www.airstreamclassifieds.com/...ud-30-texas-2/ and notice the difference. FWIW, I've noticed the same thing on fifth wheels, although there seems to be less consistency. Some have them and some don't, even within the same brand.

I'm just curious why the change. I'm assuming the law changed to allow the those lights to be deleted, saving a few dollars and a few pounds.

The first year I remember seeing that change was on the 1989 Avions. I wonder if it was the same for Airstream?

That is why I was glad my pickup came with the full set of running lights on top of the cab. Those plus the trailer lights at night create the impression something bigger is coming downtime road, which is of course true as the rig crosses the scales around 19,200 pounds.
