using instlled Zamp system with non Zamp products.

I have a 2018 22FB Bambi Sport that has a Zamp solar plug system. What if I want to purchase non Zamp products, Do I have to do something to the existing set up? Or can I use what's there with minimal changes?

Zamp reverses the polarity on all it's equipment.
If Airstream wires the Zamp connector normally, any male plug you use will be fine.
If it's an off the shelf Zamp plug polarity must be reversed.

Thank you Robert, we purchased it brand new at a dealer, so I assume it was Airstream installed.

Yes. I opted for a zamp portable kit because it made the most sense to me to stick with one manufacturer across the board.

If you’re in the market and willing to wait, I got mine online around Black Friday and remember getting a fairly decent deal — A few $100 knocked off from the largest portable unit they had.

If you purchase non zamp products you simply follow the wires from the zamp port to your battery and reverse the wires from positive to negative. It really is that easy.

I highly suggest the renogy 200 watt solar suitcase with built in solar controller. Then all you do is reverse the wires and plug into solar controller and bobs your uncle you are in business.

You can buy the mc4 to Sae adaptor from renogy or others.

Here is mine in action:

I have a 2017 Corner Bunk Flying Cloud with the zamp plug at the trailer hitch. After reading all the great information on the forums I decided to purchase the following:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 [/COLOR] (This is a 10 guage 20' extension for the portable solar panel)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (This is the adaptor/connector that will solve the "reverse ploarity" if needed)

I opted for the 100 amp Renogy portable unit.

Good luck staying fully charged!

I am looking at the 230 Watt Zamp solar suitcase. Over $1000 bucks with tax.
Am also considering the Renogy 200 Watt solar suitcase, $600 with tax.
The Zamp comes with a 15 amp controller and the Renogy has a 20 amp controller. I would consider buying 2 Renogys if there was a way to use both at the same time ??????? I understand that 400 watts on the ground is worth 600 on the roof.
I will call renogy in the morning to find out.

I’ve considered the exact same thing, two 200 watt suitcases that is, and it looks like it would work fine.

Our '03 Classic does not have the Zamp connector from the Factory.
I charge two 180W Zamp portables thru the umbilical, using the OEM Zamp portable charge cables & controllers.
I would be very hesitant to push more thru the wiring,(14G) I have now. On a really sunny day I will set the panels to keep it at or below 16a.

Know your wiring limits...👍

Hello Friends,

I suspect that you can answer this question without much brand debate.

I have 2- 100 Go Power Flex Panels on the roof and their controller. 2-12 volt Lifeline grp27 AGMs. The GoPower panels are "shedding" a thin layer of plastic and it's not the protective film. They seems to be working but it seems that I am lucky to get 2 amps when it used to be 4.5 or better. Go Power says no warranty since they are still "working"; but that is a different issue!

We don't do a lot of camping off the grid but occasionally do and issues are as follows even when the Go Powers were functional.
We cannot recover to 100% on the AGMs during the day. I believe it's the battery resistance. So each night we drift down another 10% or so...

Would a suitcase 180 or 200watt, help to get through the resistance or is the the nature of AGMs.

Much thanks,

Jeffrey

Jeff,

My first year of Zamp solar I used 1 120w suit case with 2 Lifeline AGM's, the set-up did very well in direct sun for 4-6hrs.

I'm sure a single 180 would do the job and two even better when overcast.👍
Why not try one...very easy to add another Suitcase panel.

Renogy will show you how to wire one suitcase without controller to the one with. I will two Renogy’s on roof with Renogy suitcase

You do lose a bit of efficiency with two controllers. Not as much if they are same make and model of controller, but unless they are performing at exactly the same levels, ie. Taking different input voltages and mppt processing those inputs to slightly different output voltages, the "system" will default to the lower output.
I'm not explaining it well, but the two controllers do conflict one another a bit.

Well... I wonder just how much...not too I Reckon.

Here is one 120w with a 10a controller.
And one 180w with 15a controller.
Together charging 14a 191w.
Haven't noticed a concern yet.🤓

Bob
🇺🇸

POI..now use 2 180w panels.
Move them when needed so as to overpower the ZAMP 14G wiring.

You're right, it's not a lot of loss, but watts is watts for those of us who dont have acres of panels and camp under the trees. It's not hard nor expensive to to add connectors to bypass the suitcase panels controller when desired, and plug into a pigtail directly to an adequately sized victron mppt. I just like peak performance.

Yep...probably the wiring, 191w?

I'm using 10' of 14g with SAE connectors thru the 7pin, with a 14g Y connector connected to the suitcases.
4 connections & 10 ft of wire=?
