Turkey problem

This may be a new one for you guys. I live in the country and have a problem with a turkey. Yes a Tom that apparently sees his reflection in the side of my 62 Safari and considers it his competition. He comes around and pecks at the side of the Airstream trying to fight it. I can only assume it is mating season for turkeys. Anyone have any non lethal solutions. I chase him off but he continues to return. The clucker is not intimidated by me.

Thanksgiving... or possibly a neutered mate.

try a decoy away from the trailer, then run a string around the trailer with marabou or some flashy tinsel tied to it

Well you got me curious. So I was reading that wild turkeys startle easily. So maybe some garden flags and windchimes will scare them away. Worth a shot and theyre pretty.

This is not a new one, I know someone that had to wash the turkey blood off of her trailer after this. Also had the problem on a truck.

We live in the country and have Rio Grande turkeys up daily this time of year. Yesterday I counted fifty in the front yard. The Toms will start splitting the group. A few years ago after washing out 66, a Tom started pecking the side. I chased him off. Like mentioned, anything out of the ordinary will spook them. The little cheap plastic pin wheel things on a stick at Walmart are good. If you want to get fancy, a motion activated water sprayer pointed away from the trailer. It’s the season, so it will soon pass when they’ve selected their groups.

How about a big calendar opened to November with a certain day circled in red?

Yup, you’ve got a jealous Tom picking a fight with his reflection. Try draping some fabric like burlap around the trailer so he doesn’t see himself.

About 60 years ago I was living in the country and bought a new car. The car was parked in a sort of open shed and when I came outside in the morning, there was a wild turkey on the roof. It took a while to scare it off because it seemed to be "his" car. Turkeys are not too high on the IQ scale, but they can be stubborn. Because I had no knowledge of turkeys, I wasn't sure if he'd come after me. He didn't.

A turkey is neither smart nor cooperative. They live their way and that's about all they know. They seem to be unable to understand a car coming down the road is dangerous. I don't think they'd make good pets.

Today, the first week in March, a bird that appears every year returned even though snow season is not over. He attacks the windows to scare off the competitor that looks just like him. It was worse before he found a girlfriend. The girlfriend is largely blue, but he is not. They apparently pair bond. The various things that are supposed to scare him off don't work for very long. Sometimes I try to spray him with a hose, but it is a tough spot to hit the window (up high) he loves so much. I keep hoping there is some sort of concussion protocol he must observe, but he doesn't care.

I may have to resort to bear spray or worse but I hate to do that. Last year I wrapped a plastic table cloth around the trailer but every time we had a storm it ripped. Maybe I have to wrap the turkey..

I think the idea of burlap or tarp around the trailer to hide the reflection or TitusNW’s Amazon solution might do it.

They are definitely out if force now. My sister has three Toms and a bunch of hens. They’re all pumped up showing off.

Good luck and hope you find something that works!

Okay, here is what I did when I had a bird in a hate/love relationship with it's reflection. A Townshend Solitaire, was pecking at his reflection and worse of all was crapping all over the propane cover. I downloaded a site with bird sounds and started playing it loudly nearby. The birds are very territorial, and he couldn't stand the competition and finally left. Will this work with Turkeys? Let us know...

We have lots of turkeys that regularly come through the neighborhood. I've not had a problem w/ the AS, but yes, once, a tom didn't like seeing his reflection in the side of my daughter's car: she was trying to get into her car, but he was blocking the door, trying to threaten his reflection. She (who is terrified of birds) had to shoo him off so she could get into her car and drive away (and contemplated running him over).

They tend to wander over their territory: they'll be in the neighborhood for a few days, then slide into the patch of woods on the other side of the neighborhood, then the following week will be in the next neighborhood down the ridge... they forage, clear out that patch of woods, then move on to forage on another patch. Give them time, and they should mosey on...

We've had many turkeys come to Colorado over the years. After a while, they adapt, buy a down jacket, get skis, buy a big dog, complain about the turkeys who followed them and the cycle starts over.

Ha! Love it!

Maybe I’ll wrap my house in burlap and see if that helps.
