Vintage trailers often have broken or missing trailer steps and over the years I've tried a number of portable replacements with varying success.
Wooden boxes, folding purpose built steps, conductors step boxes (train platform step) and even a custom built aluminum beauty that was more looks than function.
I've developed a list of basic requirements along the way..
- Steps must have legs or feet to accommodate uneven ground (flat bottomed box will wiggle)
- Step must be invertable into trailer doorway and able to hold chocks and leveling blocks AND the dirt those items produce - last in, first out.
- Step must not be so desirable as to be attractive to thieves (vintage conductors step for example)
- Must be light enough to lift
- Must be durable and safe
- Must be high enough to use as an emergency seat or step stool, but not so high as to be a bad step
- Surface should not tear my jeans
Over the years, I've had steps stolen, broken or I've discarded them because they were just not very functional. Most have been about 10 inches high.
Today I stumbled over this one from
rogue fitness: 12" high and 19 x 19

Seriously interesting but possibly a little tall.
Have you found the perfect step?
