Towing mirrors for MBZ GLS 450

Hello I’m another AS and trailer newbie and looking forward to picking up our new Caravel 20FB in a few weeks! Wondering if anyone has experience or suggestion for towing mirrors on our 2018 GLS? Appreciate any guidance you have.
Thank you!

Welcome Aboard 👍

You may find something here that will fit the standard mirrors. MB does not have anything as an accessory as far as I know.

Thanks Bob. We have looked at the Milenco MIL-2912 Grand Aero 3, the DM-1899 Aero 3 and KSource 3990. Wondering if anyone has had experience with any of these and the pros/cons of each and whether it has caused marring on the car mirror housing.

I use the Milenco mirrors. No marring. Just glue the rubber piece to the foot before you loose it. It holds up in all sorts of conditions.

We have used McKesh mirrors for years. We tried Milenco mirrors and went back immediately to the McKesh product (https://hensleymfg.com/products/mckesh-mirrors/). For us, the Milenco mirrors were okay, but the McKesh give us a better view behind the trailer. We gave the Milenco mirrors to friends who were very happy with them.

Auto-fold mirrors?, make sure no interference if the 450 is so equipped.

Yup. Don't forget to disable the fold feature during towing season.

Thanks all this is very helpful! I think I’m going with the Milenco mirrors. @Gator can I ask what model you went with?

Look up EMUK towing mirrors. All Mercedes and all BMW OEM in Europe. Folding function still works. Custom fit fit your 450. Doesn’t resemble “strap on” or “stick on”. Also try international Amazon for emuk.

We’ve been using the DM-2912 on a Range Rover and they work great—easy to install and remove. I did disable the automatic folding function on the car mirrors to be safe.

Used both but find McKesh better - don’t vibrate much and spot mirror add on is pretty good. Not easy getting them lined up. Looking for better solution still

The K-source Universal Towing Mirrors from Etrailer work great on our 2015 Mercedes ML250. The price is great too. Here is a link.

BMW - X5

Started with the Aero-2s. Used them for four years. They work OK. Some vibration, they can damage the OEM mirror bezel if you over tighten the clamps. Had difficulty adjusting them and tended to leave them attached. Have to be careful as they extend wider than the standard vehicle (the point of having them) and make normal driving more difficult. Would use them again, but won't recommend them.

We moved to McKeesh mirrors and found them to be superior. Our concern was that there would be maring from the strut pad and degradation of the window seal from the clip tabs. Also thought there would be difficulty adjusting them when putting them back on. None of these issues proved to be problematic. The one problem was that the window clip tabs dragged on the window making a squeal and putting a black mark on the window. We added clear plastic tape as a buffer. The tape adhesive left residue on the window. It comes off and after a period of use, the problem resolves. EDIT - get the convex wide angle additional mirrors as well. Great addition.

IMHO, the OEM type add ons work best. Not available in US when we purchased.

The McKeesh are a great all purpose solution. The older models are supposed to be better built and worth finding if possible. We just moved on with the new model units. Pat

EDIT - no, cameras do not replace mirrors. They do not! Good to have a camera. Highly recommend that addition. Gives you a view immediately behind the trailer. Use all the information you can to improve your safety.
