After months of searching and looking for the perfect Airstream and financing option, with a few fails, a few weeks ago we found what we were looking for. It does have some custom features that make it unique and appealing for us. We agreed on a price with a dealer and went forth with the financing. The dealer didn't have the Airstream ready yet, so we have been on hold. We are set to wrap up the transaction by the end of the week. It is across the country from us, so obviously we would be leaving the trailer at the dealer for several months while we make payments. We are both in the high risk category for the Covid-19 and are in self quarantine now. As we have the opportunity to withdraw from the transaction and postpone our purchase I am interested in opinions. I am of the mindset that this is going to get worse. I'm really (no offense intended) not interested in those that feel that there is an overreaction going on in our country. Many thanks!

If it were me, who wished he would have gotten his first AS much sooner, I would go thru with the purchase. The current situation will eventually pass and I think having your own place in which to sleep and eat, while traveling, in the mean time, is a good thing.

I'm assuming this is a new trailer so other than you inability to use the trailer, you still we under ample warranty when things cool down. If I were in your shoes, I probably wouldn't cancel. Stay home and well. These things will pass. I have enough optimism at this point that I just booked a campground up in Door County Wisconsin for a trip in early August and have another one set for July.

I’m in Seattle Washington. Bought a 2020 basecamp last Saturday. They were so busy I put the down payment on it that day and scheduled to finalize paperwork this Thursday.

In these last 4 days things have changed in our world dramatically and I’m now really nervous about completing the transaction. I’m probably going to do it but I’m wondering had I waited a little longer maybe I could have negotiated a better deal given the current situation.

Hi,

I would not be spending 100k+ on something I might never have a chance to use if I was in a high risk category for something that isn't going away anytime soon.

It's only a trailer they will make you another one or you can find one when you are ready to go.

Personally, I would not close that sale. Not unless you can afford to leave a lot of money on the table, and you don't care about that (which IS true for some people - time is more important than money to them).

I myself will be on the look-out for trailer deals resulting from our current situation. I don't need to buy an Airstream trailer in the short term, but if the right deal appeared in a stressed market, I could be persuaded.

It might sound mercenary, but it can work out well for both buyer and seller.

During the 2008/2009 financial crisis, DH and I were ready with a large cash downpayment when almost nobody could qualify for a mortgage in that prevailing market. As a result of that, we were able to contract for what is essentially a custom home at a tract home price. The builder desperately needed cash flow to remain in business. We had cash and a list of wants (sixty-eight of them to be precise). Did the builder make as much money off us as they would have during a normal market? Nope. But our transaction helped them with solvency. And we have enjoyed a one-of-a-kind house for more than a decade now.

Have you seen and inspected the AS?
Making payments on something as $$$$ as this, sight unseen would not be in our playbook.
Relax, take your time and try not to worry, you will find the right AS, now or further down the road.

Thanks Bob. Bay Area Airstream and Warrantee. We purchased our last AS from across the country at a dealer. I'm not so worried about that. Just the idea of buying right now and the travel. I appreciate your insight and input. Thanks!

Thanks all. This is really a tough decision. Not our first Airstream. The heart is in the way. Logic says no. The unit has a custom Ultimate Airstream renovation including a dishwasher. That is part of the feeling that it isn't just like buying any unit. I think I am still confused. I appreciate you all taking the time to try to help me though this process.

As I understand it the potential purchase is a 2013? if so perhaps have it transported to you. If a new unit that will need to be checked out that might not work. Just my 2cents.

I guess it really comes down to how much money you have and how bad you want the trailer. I saw financing mentioned. That is what tips me towards passing. If that is not an issue and you can afford to lose money in the short term for this unit them maybe. One trailer layout and decor is pretty much as good as another for my uses.

If you have found the trailer of your dreams, I would complete the transaction. I would consider hiring someone to tow it to your location versus leaving it at the dealer. Ideally, you can park it on your property to avoid storage costs.

If this really is the perfect trailer and the right price I'd say go for it. When we bought our Airstream we had to leave it at the dealer for about 3 months before we could get there to pick it up. It was, and still is, the perfect trailer at the right price for us and we haven't regretted our decision once. I was searching trailers nationwide and if we didn't get ours, we would have ended up paying more or not getting all the features we wanted.

That's a more tricky buy....

Keep in mind and I may be wrong but financing quotes are only good for 30 days. After that another credit check, score ding and perhaps different outcome. Could be better with interest rates dropping...

My dealer offered to store mine free for 90 days with proof of insurance. I found a local storage facility so did not have to.

IF this is your dream and you have your ducks in a row don't let fear dissuade you from pursuing it! I imagine you're over 60 and things can change to make it more difficult to do more extreme RV'ing. Carpe Diem!

My best friend passed away last year. His last words were "live your life". Didn't mention planning for making logical moves or worrying about expenses and what other people advised him to do. As death stared him down he regretted not doing more things like buying an AS and hitting the road! In fact that was his plan when he got SS! He collected 2 checks.....

I picked up my new FC yesterday!

If in fact this is what you have been looking for, and at the price you like and are in need of financing, the rates are rock bottom right now. Get it and leave it sit there until you feel secure enough to make the trip to pick it up.

I would wait, especially since you're in a high-risk group. Why play Russian Roulette with your life? One silver lining might be that pricing for Airstreams, in general, might fall. In the meantime, make those payments to yourself and be ready to move forward with a purchase when the pandemic ends.

The deal breaker is that the unit is located across the country. I, personally would pass. It offers you nothing in the near term. You would be better off to buy an interim trailer locally.

RVing may well be the best way to travel, but if you plan to stay at home, you do not need an RV. Note - everyone's position is different. We should not underestimate the positive value of a dream and as we get older, our time to enjoy a dream shrinks. So the pressure to move forward may be significant. However, at a minimum, stop and wait about three weeks. The world will look different - good or bad - with a bit more time ticked off.

Think of this in a different light. There may be a family down the road from the dealer who can put that coach to good use now. Storing it is a waste of a valuable resource.

But in any case, good luck with your decision. Hope to see you down the road some day in a shiny with a smile.

Go for it! You have finally found the exact right Airstream with everything you want, and having it waiting for you at the end of this siege can brighten every minute you are stuck at home. You will have something wonderful to look forward to, and you can plan your first trip, etc.
