**This Is Our Community**

I thought it would be nice if we posted some information and pictures of our area.

This picture is of the U. S. Grant Bridge located at Portsmouth, Ohio, near where we live. The bridge no longer exists. It is being replaced with a newer one. More information and pictures can be seen at the U.S. Grant Bridge Photo Journal .

IF you’re traveling through southern Ohio and are going through this area be sure and see theThe Portsmouth Ohio Floodwall Murals .

There are also a few campgrounds in the area with the closest Ohio State Park being Shawnee State Park .

The Carl Perkins Bridge is only about one mile down river from Portsmouth. The traffic is routed on U. S. 23 truck route.

In 1979 the bridge was closed for re-cabling. At that time there wasn’t a bridge close by. The nearest one was in Ironton, Ohio about 25 miles up river. To get to Portsmouth at that time one had to travel via ferry boat or a people ferry that was in service or drive to Ironton and back on the Ohio side of the river.

It added about one hour travel time each way to work at that time.

Heres our bridge, 10 years ago, they were going to tear it down, along with the only railroad tunnel in ND. We worked like h*** for 7 years, now they are a walking trail. Click on my www button at the bottom of the message for more info
