Squirrel hill Tunnel, Pittsburgh.

Can AS go thru the above tunnel? I am traveling from Nj thru the State College area on 22 to 376. My destination is 100 RIVERPLEX, West Homestead, PA. Last year I came in from Obio and my exit was closed. I found myself at the top of the hill by the beauriful chuch, cobblestone one way streets not made for towing. I do not wAnt to make any mistakes this year and need advice. I leave Thursday. Thanks in advance, I was completly panic stricken last on the roads high above the river, where no one dared to pull a trailer before, was not a ride for the faint of heart. At one point I avoided a street that ended so quickly my hitch was sure to get stuck. Please help, I have to be at that address Thursday. The tunnels and construction are killing me.

Airstreams are not that big. I believe it will fit, but I don't know. Maybe somebody from Pitt will chime in. You may want to contact the Pa dept of transportation.

Have a look at this article:

Squirrel Hill Tunnel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Two things stand out:
  1. Tunnel clearance: 13.5 feet (4.1 m)
  2. And "As of June, 2013 the ceiling is being raised because trucks were crashing into it."

I would definitely look into the status of last summer's project to raise the ceiling!

As former Pittsburgher, I understand driving Dahntahn is a pain.. Yun'z are going to need more than a GPS...

Here is link to tunnel construction..
PennDOT District 11-0

Vertical clearance and lane widths seem OK, but lane and tunnel closures through Summer of 2014 will make travel a challenge.. Tunnels closed at night, and single lane on weekends and many days mean a lot of traffic..

I think I'd try getting off Parkway (376) at Route 8, and use north on Ardmore to Swissvale Ave to Edgewood Rd and then Braddock Rd and go south over Rankin Bridge to cross Monongahela River and get on Homestead side, where you can follow river west to your desired location...

Remember, in Pittsburgh it is either Construction season or Ski season...

Thank you, I posed the question wrong, not a height issue, the real question is can I drive thru the tunnels with the trailer and my propane tanks? I am so sorry I confused the issue. In NY you are not allowed in tunnels, have to take the GWB. Pittsburgh has a lot of tunnels and now to add to the mix the Steelers are home and will let out about the same time I do, might sit tight on that one.

I saw several references that tunnels under water/rivers are lowest in center and heavy propane settles and would be dangerous, so tunnels in and out of Manhattan, Boston or Baltimore prohibit RV's with propane or are very restrictive. Tunnels through mountains or hills (like PA Turnpike or Squirrel Hill) have rise in center, and propane not prohibited, though some may have sign asking tank valves to be closed. hardly ever enforced. I could find no prohibition on RV's in Squirrel Hill Tunnel or Ft. Pitt or Liberty Tunnels, or on Turnpike... With Stillers home game, traffic is going to be dicey anywhere downtown or near 3 Rivers, and probably on Parkway...

No problem going through the Squirrel Hill tunnel with your trailer. The exit immediately when you come out of the tunnel is what you want and head towards Homestead (Waterfront area) you will cross the Homestead Grays bridge and towards the end of the bridge there is a ramp on the right that will get down into the Waterfront area. Good luck.

I will do my best to Keep Calm, two hNds on Wheel and not end up on senic hilltop again this year, or those darn hilly cobblestone roads. Thanks for the tunnel info.

Looking forward to busy work weekend there, vending at the Irish Festival. I suppose wearing my Jets Jersey not a good idea! Although JETS are so bad why would I even wear it to begin with.

I got word the Great Alleghany Passage is open to Homestead, so my bike is packed( inside this time, my bike rack goes on the 16th) happy weekend everybody
