Rollover in Quebec

Airstream roll-over near Quebec City with a Jeep towing on Highway 20 in La Pocatiere near Quebec City due to trailer sway. two adults with minor injuries, no other vehicles involved. Hope everyone is truly OK - horrible looking pics...

Thanks.

Hope everyone is OK. Is that a bike rack hanging off the back of the Airstream? If you go to Full Screen, it seems so . . .

http://www.lavantage.qc.ca/Faits-div...autoroute-20/1

There appear to be dark parallel steel pieces sticking out off the rear, and some kind of silver structure up against the back of the trailer -- not sure that this is all part of the trailer, but it looks like it IMO.

Janet, could you please translate the part about the trailer sway, and is there any indication that there were bikes on the back?

Thanks,

Peter

PS -- edit -- Google translates the text here:

http://www.leplacoteux.com/vehicule-...s-capotage-20/

as:

"The accident involved an SUV (sport utility vehicle) and the trailer he was pulling. Both vehicles ended up on the hood, following a loss of driver control. The accident injured two minors. "There was no incarceration on arrival. By cons, there was liquid leaks at the scene of the accident, something that was quickly controlled. Propane bottles were also secured, "to indicate the director of the Intermunicipal Service Fire Safety La Pocatière, Mr. Stéphane Dubé."

In the photos in the Gallerie Photos, the rescue workers seem to be carrying a grey box out of the roadside grass, and in the last photo this box appears to be leaning against the rear street-side corner of the trailer, as if maybe it had been on top of some kind of rack hanging off the back of the trailer? TBD

I can take a crack at it...

The accident involved an SUV (sport utility vehicle) and the trailer being pulled. Both vehicles ended up on their roofs, following a loss of driver control. The accident injured two minors. There were no arrests on arrival. There was fluid spills at the scene of the accident that were quickly controlled. Propane bottles were also secured, said the director of the Municipal Fire Safety service in La Pocatière, Mr. Stéphane Dubé.

On edit - I see google translate has about the same thing...

Thanks Janet, I would be curious to have everyone check the photos (Full Screen view) and identify what that structure off the rear, and the grey box, might be, as detailed in my recent post.

Looks like a rather heavy duty bike rack, perhaps for a motorcycle. It is showing excessive stand off for a bicycle rack, but a motorcycle would easily fit there. If it was a motorcycle that could explain a lot.

On closer examination, in the next to last photo in the Galerie Photos in Janet's second link, that grey box looks like a large storage container IMO. The round grab handle is vertical on the left in this photo. The last photo does appear to have the box located near its location on the trailer. Wonder if the contents spilled out, and if the rescue workers collected them.

Would love to have someone follow up on this if you can navigate the French language sites.

Looks as though the grey box was some sort of large storage container being cantilevered out the back of the trailer.

I imagine that the Jeep has a rather short wheel base also.

Two factors that could well have contributed the the misfortune.

I believe this should be two with minor injuries, not two minors. Or as Google translated it on one of the pages "two miners".

Did you look carefully at the referenced photos, in Full Screen view (when possible)?

Please give us your opinion about the grey box, and the two dark parallel members which appear to be extending out of the back of the trailer.

Thank you.

Without actual facts my opinion is as useless as any others. But to play your silly game, to me that looks like a roof top storage/cargo box from the top of the Jeep.

Fair enough, but why call this a "silly game?" What about the black "beams" (my opinion) sticking out from the back of the trailer, and that silver structure (a platform folded up?) which appears to be an extra at the back window? [Full Screen view]

We are looking at the same photos. Can two different people have different opinions about them?

Was there a sway control issue here, and did excess weight hanging off the trailer's rear contribute to the accident?

Curious minds want to know . . .

If you are not curious, fine, but please don't beat the rest of us up!

Thank you, Michael.

Peter

PS -- edit -- that grey box is much bigger than one would put on the roof of the Jeep IMO. Compare its size to the two men carrying it -- huge. Plus the photos of the Jeep do not show any lashings or straps which would have held the box on the roof. Unlikely IMO that a roof-top box would break off AND take all of its attachment devices with it, again (obviously) in my opinion.

Accident reconstruction is an imprecise science, but if you, Michael, have any further suggestions, I would be happy to hear and discuss them. All we have at this point IS the photos, and they may tell more than is obvious at first glance . . .

The bottom line is we can learn from this accident if we want to.

Without more and better photos I have no opinion about the bars or any of your other off the wall questions. Continued speculation at this point is pointless other than typical Airforums entertainment value.

" . . . off the wall . . . speculation . . . entertainment value . . . "

???

If we can prevent a future accident, if we can learn from somewhat-informed guess-work, isn't this worth it?

If the photos are ALL we will ever have to discuss, as "facts," what do we do then?

Admit defeat and chalk this accident up to a no-learning-moment experience?

PS -- On the recent Out of Control Sway thread, after many pages of feedback, the original poster reduced the bike rack on his 19' from 4 bikes to 2 child's bikes, possibly reducing the risks to his family down the road. Was this a good result after the efforts of many posters who were concerned about his safety, as well as that of the motoring public? Or do you still feel that this was simply a "guilt trip" I was laying on the OP? [even though many other people seemed to agree with the risks being created BTW]

How can you learn from something that you know absolutely nothing about? Do you have forensic training to determine the facts from these photos? Speculation is a waste of time that will get you exactly the same place you are now; knowing nothing about the cause of the accident.

Have you looked carefully at the photos in Full Screen view when possible?

What is that large grey box and where did it come from? What are the black arms coming off the rear of the trailer, if that is what they are?

If the photos are All the facts we ever have, can we learn anything about possible causes of this accident?

Are you curious to glean what we can from the photos, or do we just chalk it up to incomplete information?

My review suggested that the box came from the roof rack of the Jeep. Looks like mounting pads on the cross bars. My eyes are old and the pictures are a bit grainy, but what looks like an Equilizer hitch should have kept everything stable. This one is a puzzle.

Edit - delete last line.

Please look again at the photo with the box being carried out of the roadside grass. There are four grown men carrying it! And it is huge.

And in the last photo, it is resting on the ground at the rear corner of the trailer, and it comes up to the blue mid-wall exterior trim on the Airstream, or about 4' off the ground IMO.

PS it is only possible to examine the photos on a real computer screen, or large tablet device or iPad IMO. A phone screen does not permit a good examination.

Another account of the accident, this one with video:

http://cimt.teleinterrives.com/nouve...route_20-28225

Definite signs that there was something mounted on the back bumper. Also looks like a tire (or tires) may have blown out on the curb side.

Must have been a scary thing to go through! Looking at the SUV I wouldn't have been surprised if the injuries had been more than minor.
