Proof that SOB's are C-R-A-P!

I found this video of the building of an SOB, Jayco or something. Take a look at the quality (or rather, lack thereof) built into that unit. The sad thing is that this looks like a promotional video!

I watched it and it made me very, very happy that I have an Airstream.

Probably. I'll bet it doesn't show "roof trusses" being installed, either

Here's one: It's from the '80s, and I'm still looking for a newer one I found a while back.

And this is the other one I was looking for:

You'll notice that all the furniture is loaded and installed AFTER the walls go up, an important difference to those of us that want to renovate...

Standard modern assembly line building. Just like a car, toy helicopter, a microwave or most other modern items.. Note that the whole 6 hours thing is only "assembly" if you added up all the time (man hours) in the fabrication of all the parts, you might be surprised how much goes into something like that. It only takes 90 minutes to "build" a corvette.. at least that's what it looks like when you go the factory, but all those sub assemblies don't just appear out of thin air ready to be mounted.

Doesn't make them C R A P. I will point out that particular Jayco can be bought for a whole lot less then a comparable length AS, and for a lot of families, that is a good thing. Gets them out of the house and camping. And I can tell you, after looking for a couple years, there are PLENTY of SOB's out there that are NOT c r a p.

I agree...my guess is that the Jayco being built sells for 1/3 or less than a comparable length new airstream. Not sure how the "value equation" would come out if you compared relative quality AND relative cost between the two.

My first unit was a 26 foot Jayco. We really enjoyed it. I tried to buy it back and it had been resold to parts unknown. Ours was a great starter trailer.

32 a day...nice numbers.
Roof looks no better than a SOB I had in 1974.
That wood will turn into styrofoam once it gets wet

I have owned a Jayco 5th wheel since 2003. It is now going on 21 years old. Every appliance in it is original and still working. The build quality, might leave something to be desired, but then again, it's wood construction. The wood frame construction cannot be beat for keeping warm in the winter. My trailer is a four season, Designer series. My trailer has seen a lot of road miles, but is now content to spend it's days at a permanent camp spot in the east TN mountains. I have the AS for travel and rallies.

Easy there, big fella... I chose an SOB in '06 after twenty years of Airstreams. My SOB is every bit the quality of Airstream, won't dent in a hailstorm, has every bit the longevity of an Airstream, is a true four seasons coach, and doesn't have filiform corrosion issues. And, I paid about half for it new than the comparable A/S 25'.

Not all of 'em are junk.

Were parts of that video speeded up?

Those are some fast workers.

Glad to have my rivets and aluminum frame.

I wouldn't lump all SOBs into the same "crap" bucket! As 85MH325 mentioned, there are some quality units out there, but Jayco just isn't one of them!

Also, if I were a marketing head, there is NO WAY I would want my potential customers seeing such a fast past (read as shoddy craftsmanship) assembly line. Were a majority of those workers Amish? Didn't know that they could take caffeine or other "stimulant" drugs.... Slow down brother!

If it is Big Foot then you are correct, a great design and durable is the operative word. Have they survived the storm? I heard trouble was brewing for them.
