Talking Our Airstream has arrived!!!

On a whim .. I called Toscanos this morning to check the status of my trailer .... Airstream told me that it would be released late last week.

Sure enough .. the Classic 34 arrived about 20 minutes before my call.

Needless to say ... we are worked up in a bit of a froth. A little hard to stay cool, calm and collected.

We will probably pick it up on Monday ... most of the staff is at an RV show in Pleasanton ... and we still have to get the Hensley installed, have the PDI performed and then do a proper walk through.

So it looks like a Monday delivery ... but I am so tempted just to drive the 150 miles to look at it.

Gotta stay calm.

We're not sure where we want to stay ... perhaps somewhere close to Toscanos ... like Casa de Fruita .. just in case we have to get something fixed that didn't show up in the walk through.

Then again .. we may just haul it home and play house.

I'll post some pics .. but right now the Album Admin feature is not working ... I still get an error message. Unable to upload anything. I might have to post them somewhere else.

Toscanos? So far .. we have had nothing but good experiences with them. They are heads and shoulders above my nearest dealer (3 miles away) .. so they got my business.

I think the next 5 days will be the longest of my life.

You'll just have to keep yourself busy for the next 5 days so you won't have time to daydream about what is waiting. Let's see, Sunday has playoff football all day, Saturday...

Glad to hear about Toscanos. Although I did not buy there, I have spent much money on their service dept. Glen the service manager has always treated me right. And they did some real nice body work for me. Have fun on Monday!!!

Pork,

I know exactly what you must be going through.......I mean we too waited almost a week before we got down to Piqua, OH to pick it up, only not to be able to bring it home. We waited an additional 3-4 days after that......so I feel your pain....just know that when you pull away with it, you will have permagrin for at least a day or so. Even in your sleep there will be this HUGE grin that won't go away. You'll spend hours in it at first.

One suggestion is that if the dealer doesn't Walburnize it, that you should after a good washing when it gets home.

AND THIS IS A BIG ONE!!! Check the torque on the lug nuts for the next few hundred miles. When the Safari was delivered I found two lug nuts that were loose. Not that the weren't tight at one point, but alum wheels take a few attempts to seat properly.....

Congrats and enjoy your long awaited new toy!

I wish somebody would have told me about Walbernize when I bought mine. I just found out about it recently from this forum. but it is too late since my plasticoat is peeling like mad. At least now I know.

Big Dee,

99 was the first year that they went to plasticoat from what I understood. I am not sure when in the production process they started this. Are you sure you have plasticoat?

Twink,
It's a 99 but built in 98. From what I learned on this forum, I think mine was one of the first ones with plasticoat.
But really not sure. Some coat sure has peeled off. I do a lot of coast camping.
I'm going to contact the factory. Wonder what they will say? I can't get to Ohio this year anyway.

walbernize Twink?

Say Twink,

I saw in your posts that you were very diligent about Walbernizing your Bambi. With the winters the way they are here and where you are how do you Walbernize then? I don't think the dealer Walbernized and probably sat on his lot since it was a newly purchsed 2003. Are we in big exterior trouble? Snow covering it now and no access to indoor facility-it's an outdoor AS.

Wheel,

Frankly, I was lucky. About 3 weeks ago it was 50. So I washed and Walburnized it. The next few days were also about 50 with lows in the high to mid 30s....

Now as for the Bambi. I first washed and wax it at the end of March as it was then above 50 for about 2 days. I picked it up in Feb. Then it got colder again. Once it got above 50 I washed it another 3-4x and Walburnized it about the same.

At the current temps though, it's just not possible.

Big Dee,

I fear it might not be plasticoat depending on the month constructed. I would be VERY interested in knowing for sure, unless you are 110% on it. I bet you are right, but my gut tells me that as in the past they have carried some of the current model year well into the early prev year( as we all know the next year starts about April). Only the factory know s for sure based on the VIN#. That said, I'd really want to be sure as I have seen some (mostly all) good maintained plastic coats that are about 4 years.....

My observation has been that in most cases the plasticoat if it fails, fails soon, whereas the clearcoat dies fairly early (1-3 years) depending on conditions.

Case in point...there is a forum member with an '03 where the plasticoat has begun to fail.

Twink,
I'll find the VIN and send an email today to the factory. I am really wondering now what it is.

Twink,
The factory said my safari has plasticoat. It was built June '98. They said to keep it waxed to help protect it til I can strip and recoat. I hate to think how much $$$ that will cost.
