OPD controversy
Thought you all might not know that the new National Fire Protection Association guideline (code?) is creating some controversy out here in the Seattle area. It seems some 24 states have not adopted these guidelines that went into effect April 1st. Many people are trying to refill their tanks for summer barbecues and are told they can't because of the new national fire code. They later learn that this guideline is not being inforced by our state's Fire Marshal (my co-worker filled old his tank yesterday at U-Haul). I'm personally going to purchase new tanks as mine are in rough shape and their inspection date has expired. Anyway, I thought you would like to know that "what we hear is not always entirely true". I have included the link to our Seattle Times newspaper so you can read for yourself about whats going on. After bringing up the site, type "Propane Tanks" in the Search Archive box in the upper right corner of the front page. You will find a couple articles from the past two days. Enjoy!

Larry,
I've also found this to be true in TN. I spoke with our fire inspector and found that until the guidelines are written into Tennessee's version of OSHA (TOSHA), it will not be enforced.

In Canada there is no OPD requirement yet, of course if travelling in the U.S. you may not be able to refill but at this point no problem in Canada

Personally, I think the benefits of the new valves far outweigh the cost of conversion. The ease of removing the fittings without a wrench is just great, and the shutoff on refill has twice caught refueling people who were not paying attention to proper fill levels. I think the other feature that most may not be aware of is the shutoff that occurs if the valve senses a high flow rate, which could occur in the case of a broken hose.

Propane cost in your area?
Just had my 'new' tanks filled today.
No problems. Just had to purge(at no charge) them first then, filled with propane. Simple operation.
cost in this area(NH):13$ per 30 lb tank
ciao
