Online Airstream Itinerary (state parks) Planner?

Having decided I just can't take these South Louisiana summers anymore without a MASSIVE (month or more) break hauling the trailer around I am trying to find some kind of an itinerary planner that would list state parks we could stay in on our July-Aug 2010 whirlwind adventure.

The rough plan at this point is to head WEST since we have family outside of Austin and I love most everything about the wide-open Western U.S. I'd like to make it as far as maybe, Ft. Collins, at least. Naturally we'd like to make a loop, either heading south (preferable) down to Tuscon (San Diego?) or up through the midwestern plains.

I'd really like to find an online resource that lists state parks and/or Airstream friendly campgrounds (we're not totally boondockable at this point but haven't ruled it out).

If I strike out totally I'll just have to buy one of those fat RV books and start with pencil and paper. any help appreciated.

Hey Rick! Good to see you on the boards once again, we've missed having you around.

Having family in the Austin area, I'm sure you know you won't get much of a break from the heat hanging around here-- we hit 105 at my house today. And once you get past the Hill Country, going further West from here just gets you into the REALLY hot areas of Texas and New Mexico. I'd plan on heading NORTH as quickly as possible.

You might check the "cheap or free" areas of the Forums, they are primarily geared toward boondocking but still have a lot of useful information.

Take care,
-Marcus

Welcome back! Get a good road atlas and the state by state atlases that are out there for any state you might want to go to. Get some coffee and spend some long winter nights pouring over them. There are tons of great threads with tips. My advice: spend what you need to to be able to boondock- it will save you tons in the long run, you will have better camping, and it just is a better way to go. On my summer runs, I try and boondock 2/3rds of the time.
