Smile On the topic of Naming "Units"

Before we left - we racked our brains trying to think of a name - PS saw the thread on "inanimate" things A/S - too funny! Some people are just far to sensitive

Anyway - gymes always called her a "unit" and it sort of stuck a bit. The fact that in 1969 the Moon landing was the biggest event in both Peter's and My life - that we remember from back then - A/S GT6921 has in the past 7 days been refered to as "Moon Unit" on several occasions.

Still not sure though, and trying to tie in the decor theme together which we have not decided on yet...we needed a sign

We were in Tenessee - Hill Billy country - and Peter decides to pull off at the worst possible truck stop in the whole of the USA - and there was no way I was going to even venture into their rest room!!!! (Peter said after, good thing you didn't, there were probably peep holes )

At this stop I saw our new Tow Vehicle - it only had a red primer paint layer - just beckoning a fancy new paint job - and as I visioned a jet black with florecent stars with a big moon on the hood with sparkling chrome - something caught my eye - I looked down and what did I find.......

"Moon Beam" as I named her - a Bobble Head - to funny, too freaky and definately a sign.

I am so into space things, and her "hair doo" is exactly how mine was in 1969. She was brushed off and placed on the dash for the remainder of the journey home!

Still not sure about "Moon Unit" - it is growing on us - but we are now sticking with the "big event" as our theme, and decor - so if any of you can point me into any direction to find out as much information - pictures etc of that great event (landing and walking on the moon) It would really be appreciated.

My parents even gave me the Life Magazine issue which I kept all these years (35 to be exact) must dig it up out of our memories trunk and see what shape it is in?

New Tow Vehicle

and this is the picture of the truck I fell in love with.

Does anyone know what it is? Can something like this be rigged up to tow? Can the old vehicles accept what is called Possitrack axles for better tracktion?

Would be a great project - you never know that might be our next trip
Not for a couple of years I'm sure.

If I didn't know better I would guess an early 50's Chevy. Interesting though how you see design elements that are showing up on some of the current versions of pickups.

Oh what is that truck in the picture...

Looks to me like a '54 Chevy. I happen to have one (1953) that I need to sell. The restoration was started but I have lost interest.

The front end suspension was professionally changed to a Buick Regal with IFS, disc brakes and power steering. The rear end is from a Chevelle. It sits at normal height as opposed to the slammed look that many use for roadsters.

I would think that with the proper modifications (somewhat like what was begun on mine) that it would tow a small TT just fine. The cabs are a little small but we all make sacrifices.

BTW, if anyone can help me sell mine I would appreciate it very much.

Moon Beam is a cute handle

And appropriate too, since Airstream designed a mobile quarantine facility (MQF) to temporarily house the returning astronauts.
HERE is a site that gives the history of the first moon landing, along with photos.
And here is a THREAD which discussed the Apollo11 Airstream.

Thumbs up GMC

Gt6921 Truck in photo is a 1954 GMC, Chevy's had a different grill. Truck could very easily be set up for towing, but would highly recommend modern drive train. 54 originally had a 6 cyl engine w/ approx 95 HP. I use a 51 Ford F-1 for towing. The original suspension would work ok, but like 74S pointed out independent front ends ride smoother than a straight front axle which is what the 54 GMC would have if original. My 51 has a straight front axle. And yes a posi rear would fit.

74S PM me with details of your truck. Don't know anyone looking right now, but I deal with antique autos all the time and belong to several clubs including AACA in Hersey PA.
