Some, but maybe not all, newer ITBCs use brake pedal pressure to decide how much voltage to apply to the trailer brakes. While sitting still in my 2013 Ram 2500, the harder I press the brake pedal, the more voltage is applied.

Electric brakes may not be linear, but they are proportional; the more voltage is applied, the harder they brake.

As perryg said, you should have your controller gain set to just below the point where the brakes lock up. The neat thing with discs is they are more repeatable. The drum brakes will fade when hot or wet. Even mild stops will cause decreased braking power. I discovered that with my tests referenced above.

I have a nice set of hammers of all kinds and sizes, and have been known to break stuff with big pipe wrenches…of which I have a good assortment.

I've taken working stuff apart (furnace sail switch) just to see the rascal.

And yes it still works.

Had an issue where individual hubs would be hot enough for grease to come out of the bearings. No way to put the grease back in, so that wasn't good. Once a year I get to jack up the trailer and adjust the brakes. And I got a spare bearing cartridge. Since I have a spare now, I will never need it.
In a month the AS Service Center is installing Never-Lube axles on our 30 Classic and Dexter Disc Brakes.

But you have an 04, will they do it on a new trailer?

Converting brakes is not an assembly line option for Airstream.

We had seal failures on three of the four Never-Lube Dexter bearings on our 2014 31' Classic in 2020 with a disc brake conversion to Kodiak calipers in 2015. Dexter charged $800 for the four replacement bearings. They said they were discontinuing that bearing and ours were among the few that were left in inventory....
