Be aware that there are a number of Airstream scams that are now being posted on Craigslist. Great price and condition but the seller says the trailer is in storage and he is in a foreign country and can not show you the trailer. These are the same kind of scams that have been run on Ebay for a number of years but now they have migrated over to the free listings on Craigslist.

Yes, I answered an ad for a 2006 Safari for $10K. It's a funny dialog and you will notice that she must have forgotten that she ran this ad in craigslist because she starts to refer to eBay toward the end.
Here is the email chain....
EMAIL #1 from scammer (her name is Lora Nyburg):
First of all thank you for your interest in my trailer.
Let me tell you that my trailer is in excellent working condition, no scratches, no dents and it has clear US title, manuals, and all the original documentation included, which will be delivered along with the trailer.
The trailer is still with the shipping company(kept in a storage facility) in the US and it's ready to be delivered. I decided to sell my trailer for a personal reason which involves also the fact that I have to move out of the country. The price for the trailer is $10000.
Mail me soon and let me know if you are interested,
Thank You!
In my response, I asked to view the trailer ahead of time.
This is email response #2 from the scammer:
Sorry but allready i leaved the US. The trailer remaind there in the shipping company. I would give you the adress of the shipping company but unfortunatly no one can view it without the owner. Is packed, ready for delivery, with all the paper's with it. I paid eBay Purchase Vehicle Protection to take care of all selling of this trailer, so anybody can be happy. They use a Trusted Bank Account. If you want more details about this just ask.
Mail me if you are still interested
The last response I received from the scammer was:
Hello
We will use eBay and you have to make the payment in a eBay trusted bank account.
The funds will be secured until the trailer is delivered to you, with a proper executed title.
The trailer will arrive within 7,8 days at your home address and you will have another 5 days inspection period.
The deposit is fully refundable so if the trailer isn't as described or if you can find anything wrong with it (hidden defects, scratches, rust, oil leaks) then you will get your money back, no questions asked.
If you are ready to purchase my trailer i need your full name and address to open the case.
The trailer will come with all the papers including the title.
Waiting

yukionna, I love the fact that the scammer refers to getting your money back due to oil leaks, among other things. Those dang oil leaks on Airstream trailers! Gotta watch out for them, for sure!

There's another Craigslist scam being run in California. Last I saw, it was showing up in the Monterey area list. They're advertising an '81 Excella II. It's in pretty good shape, but the scam is that they will take your deposit and then try to delay the sale for a week, at the end of which, they will try to raise the price. If you demand a refund of the deposit, they'll say they spent it, and you'll just have to pay more for the trailer.
Their goal is to take no more than $1,000 for the deposit, (My friend offered $5,000 and they took only $1,000.) which they figure is small enough that people will walk away from it, rather than make several long trips to get it back. They're very good at what they do (They're members of a community of gypsies in Concord, CA, according to the police there.) and it was only through early police intervention that my friend succeeded in getting back his deposit.

Well, come on now. They are using a "Trusted Bank Account". What could possibly go wrong?

Scammers getting smarter every month...
In my new job as Risk Manager for large Credit Union, it is amazing how many scams we see every month.. Most are stopped, but many work, and we and members are both experiencing losses.. A few groundrules for sellers and buyers...
1. ANY overpayment offer with cashier or money order or payroll check is 99% likely to be fraud. Most recent ones even answer phony phone # on check and confirm to sucker "check is valid.."
2. Multiple Money Orders in same amount are going to be counterfeit...
3. The only place you have right to present check for cash is at institution that check is drawn on, and that right is absolute whether you have account or not. Many CU's use other institutions as clearing banks, however, so read fine print.
4. Do not wire funds unless you really and truly have confirmed physical item, titles and parties. There is no recourse or refund or return of wired funds. Hit the button, and they're gone permanently.
5. DO NOT expect law enforcement, US attorneys or others to care if you are cheated. They have thresholds of caring, and for most it's a very large number. We rarely get anyone to return calls for thefts and frauds less than $100,000... Even postal inspectors are stretched too thin to respond often...
6. If you deposit a counterfeit check or money order, and it hasn't been rejected at the end of the "Hold" period, the money isn't yours yet. Often counterfeits take a week to 12 days to be returned, and the deposit will be reversed whenever the defective item is returned...
Sad to see fraudsters move over from E-Bay to Craigslist, but they'll go where there's money to be made.. Getting a wire for $1,000 or $10,000 without having to use a weapon or risk getting your picture taken in a convenience store or liquor store is pretty good income...

This is a typical "nigerian scam". The gambet runs from everything, a travel trailer, to computer products, from automobiles to yatchs. Tehy search the internet for targets.
The "tells" are: their responses are in non-standard english, they always want to give you more money than asked in return for a "cashiers' check, just return the overage to them via money order.
The Nigerian Government does nothing to stop the scamsters as it is a village industry for them.

Great list! Thanks for sharing!
I have a related story to share about the time I sold my motorcycle on craigslist -- I ended up only accepting cash for the sale. The reason I did this was because my bank advised me to only accept cash when I told my bank about the impending sale and asked them what forms of payment I could accept from the buyer that would insure 100% that I would receive the funds. I'm still stunned with the answer they gave me -- cash! I find it hard to believe in this day and age that cash is the only guaranteed form of payment.
I asked about a certified bank check and the banker indicated that there is no such thing any longer and that there is no guarantee with a check, i.e., that months later it could still reject and that I would be responsible for the funds! Are there any other bankers or others out there that can corroborate this story?

Thread defined
I failed to define my intents with this thread in my first posting . My original intention was for members to post interesting finds they run across on craigslist - airstreams, or other vintage trailers that other members might be interested in.
While all the fraud info is great to share and make sure everyone is aware of... there are multiple threads already existing for that purpose. Here's a few:

Airstream 1963 22' safari $1000 obo, in need of total overhaul. Check www.airforums.com for an idea of the work needed to finish/restore this airstream. Comes with title. Has a two holes in the roof, one from a wood stove and one from damage. Serious inquiries only. A project I unfortunately don't have any time to complete. Me and my wife spent a good deal of time sanding/stripping the inside paint layers to expose the aluminum look pretty good. Buyer is resonsible for pick up. tyler mckenzie 595 6464

Good find Barry - I wonder if they have the interior pieces? Nice of them to include a plug for the forums!
