I am pretty sure that is an California made 1957 Bubble because the wheel wells appear to have the front to rear slope that was only utilized by the California plant.

He didn't give me the $75.00 fee but did give me a Hensley Arrow already attached and $1,000.00 off his asking price. I think that was pretty swell of him. It was well worth the drive from L.A. to TN. Can't wait to see all of you on the road.

not craiglist but free (silver streak) to me?---hello--I was out working on my 56 Bubble this afternoon and my oldest son's friend's dad came over to pick up his boy. He said--i have one of those old alluminum trailers sitting out at one of my farms--"it's gutted out and needs a ton of work but the outside's in pretty good shape--if you want you can have it --i'll just give it to you for free" he said. Man--what are hard thing to pass up. however, I'm realizing what it takes (dollar wise) to rebuild a trailer. When i was on a pizza run i had to go out to his farm to check it out. it's a cool looking silver streak rocket 28 footer but needs lots and lots, and lots of money to make roadworthy. I need someone to talk me out of throwing some spare tires on it and crawling home with it. The skin seems doable minus one dent by the door, a couple holes from old vents but several of the old windows were toast and boarded up to keep water out. it needs more work than my bubble did that's for sure as the bubble's exterior is solid. do any of you know much about the rocket model or silverstreaks in general? I know they're not as collectable as airstreams but still interesting. cheers--ted

How much do you think it would cost to replace the quarter panel and end cap? I am assuming that the panels are no longer available so they would have to be from salvage.

1958 to 1963 Airstreams used 7 segments on the front and rear.

Most of those segments are still available.

Good to know and thank you. I imagine I could purchase them straight from Inland RV or do you recommend that I salvage them myself? I am hoping to look at the coach tomorrow depending on if the person before me decides to purchase.

hmm . . . that's not a 59 it's a 56 (if it is a 59 then someone talked the factory into building a 13 panel a couple years after they had moved onto 7 panels . . .).

Anyway since it's a 56 you can't buy the "factory" panel, however the good news is those panels are flat, simple shapes, no compound curves. They have a tiny, fairly easy to duplicate, "creased" edge. So even though you can't buy it off the shelf, it's relatively easy to re-create.

Having said all that, when I look at the available pictures I don't see any damaged "end caps" . . . the bottom front quarter panel looks damaged though . . . and that panel is another flat piece of aluminum and not that "technically" difficult to recreate and replace.

Ok so let us break down some of the obvious issues. HUGE dent in curbside front quarter panel. Front end cap just left of center looks dented. Wheel well and aft curbside looks mangled and dimpled. Rear quarter panel on curbside looks dented or creased. Rear access panel?? Is that how it's supposed to look? Interior is no where near original. What the heck happened to the bathroom? Did they do away with it and make it into a master bedroom? What's with all the aluminum hanging over the serial plate. Looks like another piece of sheet metal "stuck on" to stop leakage. Also isn't the window in front of the door supposed to be a dual louvered window? Looks like a single pane fixed to me. Which brings me to the important question. How much is this worth? It would take several thousand to restore. I am thinking upwards of $5,000-6,000 depending on the "rollability" factor. I am guessing this has been used as a rental unit for some time now knowing Socal's lack of affordable housing. Despite all of the obvious flaws I am still in love with it. Of course this love hinges on how it "smells" should I get the opportunity to view it tomorrow. Any words of encouragement or caution are greatly appreciated.

It's dirt cheap anyway.
I would not get into something that needs extensive bodywork like this myself. I looked into repair of a 67 caravel a couple of years ago that was in similar shape. I am soooo glad I passed it up. I ended up finding a '64 Safari in great exterior condition for a little more money. Now I just have interior woodwork and systems to work out.
If metalwork doesn't deter you this may be right up your alley though!

$800 is probably reasonable . . . although I think you might be missing a "1" in front of your "restoration" number.

And as far as smell goes, I can smell it from here. One "trick" I've seen, (not saying anyone here would do this . . . it "worked" on me once), is placing odor masking "devices" around the trailer. I can be a little naive sometimes and when I saw "dryer sheets" ("bounce") placed in all the cabinets, under beds, in drawers . . . it didn't even ocurr to me what they were doing there. Took them all out and soon found out why they were there. I guess I'm a "Live and learn" kind of person.

It is worth about what they are asking. But, I think you are about half way there when you think 5000 will do the job. Just sit down and add up the costs not to mention the time involved.
