I'd have to go with a Born Free.

Artic Fox, and I like the Jayco Eagles, too.
And, of course, an Avion or Silver Streak - if someone else had already done the restoration.

Hi, actually the GMC motorhome had a rear air bag suspension. They were, and still are, a very nice set-up.

If Airstream never existed, I'd probably have looked at what was out there, and kept my boat rather than buy an RV.

My Mother has a Born Free 22 and loves it! Its made very well and has similarities to AS. I like the pluming in her rig, built in winterizing connections. Also all the bays, water heater and water connections are at waist height so you don't have to bend down to hook up etc. She's 72 so it comes in handy.

We switched from a BOAT (Bring On Another Thousand) as well. We loved the boat ... but we also love our Airstream and it has been much more affordable.

New TT wise, if I wanted to spend the bucks then an Arctic Fox. If not, perhaps another Jayco, we had good luck with ours and they have/had? a great 2 year bumper to hitch warranty. Dollar for dollar a good RV value.
If a 5er, maybe a Carriage, they are pretty nice.
An Earthroamer would be sweet if I was going to be able to use it. I saw the first one ever in the flesh in Los Alamos (parked in a yard) a couple of weeks ago, pretty cool. Born Free makes a very nice "C" if I was going mainstream.
I use to dream of doing a bus conversion (Prevost, MCI, Eagle etc.). But now that I have been Rving for a number of years, I don't think I would like the limitations (camping site size wise) that these units have to deal with.
Vintage wise, maybe a Silver Streak, they are pretty cool.
That said, I'm glad they made Airstreams.

Earthbound would be my vote. Coolest interior ever! The people who designed this really understand trailers. I've been all over this trailer at an RV show with the factory rep. There is no wood in this trailer (no dreaded floor rot. I wish Airstream would offer composite floors, I would gladly pay the extra for it). Aluminum frame, seamless sidewalls, thermal pane windows. Every plumbing line has its own shut of valve (great for traveling during the winter). An electrical outlet just above the door near the awning bracket to plug in your patio lights. It's light too, the 26ft model GVWR is only 5840lbs, 4140 lbs dry. 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. They thought of everything.
I love my Airstream but I'm tired of keeping an eye out for leaks and the sick feeling I get when I hear hail!
Regards
Paul

Earthbound has problems too.
Even though AS can be a PITA at times, it never loses its cachet.

Owning an Avion makes this an easy choice, but Bigfoot gets a strong 2nd for us.

While the Airstream was being serviced, I snooped around - looked at some Earthbounds.
The interior has some positive features - huge bathrooms and the finishing on the cabinets was nice. However, I thought the floor linoleum looked cheap. It struck me as a hybrid. Not Airstream. Not an SOB. Something that is searching for its own identity.
From the outside, they looked like just another white box trailer to me -
in shades of grey.
