Hello racer57; We have a 86 Limited 34' Airstream. We find it very comfortable for long distance traveling. It weighs in the 8000 pound range with maybe 900 hitch weight. We pull it with a F-350 and before that an E-350 van.
I don't know of any major watch outs on the mid 80s trailers. One that has been sitting for many years might be full of mice, and might have hardened rubber suspension rods in the axles. Triple axles trailers have more side loading on tires, wheels and axles during sharp turns on pavement, which has been reported as a concern.
The oval "stack" windows in these trailers are known for internal seal failure between the dual panes of glass. Ours have failed and the windows are wet between the glass panes. We live with it for now. Pull the curtains and worry about something else.
Check that subfloor. If it's been wet due to leaks, it will likely have soft spots. The belly pan rivets tend to corrode holes in the belly pan aluminum. You can bet some of the appliances will need replacing. We are on our second water heater, second fridge, second furnaces (2), second air conditioner, third water pump. But the stove and oven are original in ours.
I believe the cabinetry in these top of the line Airstreams is very durable. Ours still looks good.
The aluminum is softer than the older trailers, meaning you will be prone to more dents. The clear coat is likely worn off due to sun and weather, so maybe stripping and polishing is in order.
