Forum vs. List Server
There is some debate about why the Airstream community online needs a forum site (like this) when there are 2 huge list servers already brimming with activity?
My Opinion:
THEY ARE BOTH GREAT!
When trying to compare different communication tools, keep in mind:
1. Features/Benefits of each (pluses)
2. Limitations of each (minuses)
3. User Requirements

Email sent to VACList...
Here is an email I sent to the VACList after a few people questioned the need for this forum site. I understand their view but respectfully disagree...

The forum was not intended to take away from this list! Actually there is a link to join this list from the announcement on the top of every thread. By educating each other on the pluses and minuses of the diffrent communication tools, we can each choose to use which ever tool we feel fits our needs better!
I respect the fact that many people perfer to use a list server over a forum. I personally like forums better because I do not have to sift through so many emails to pull the information I am looking for. On the other hand, you may have to wait longer for a reply! Some people access the internet via cell phones. They require the ability to download the information. Type their responses & at a later time upload them. They are very different tools, similar to email and instant messaging.
AirstreamForums.com was created out of my desire to help the Airstream community organize the wonderful information that is being transfered. I actually contacted another forum owner to see if they were interested in upgrading their forums. I never got a response.
I purchased (out of my own pocket) "best-of-breed" forum software because I felt the FREE software packages that I have seen running other Airstream sites did not offer the features needed to have a great forum community. Most individuals would not attmept creating a site like this due to cost involved. Fortunately I own a web hosting company and have donated the resources to provide this tool to the Airstream community for FREE. There is also a Picture Manager feature that allows you to upload 1MB worth of pictures for FREE!
These features that make AirstreamForums.com better include the ability to attach images to your post, automatic email notification when you posts is replied to & privacy controls that prevent email spiders from collecting your email address to sell to spammers. You do not need cookies enabled to use the forums. There is a setting when you register to turn them off or on.
I get my VACList sent to me in group format. The last one was 40 messages long. That means you have to read through all 40 messages to pull out what you are looking for. Imagine if you went to an RV parts store and said "I looking for a vent". Then he began to show you all kinds of other parts while you were waiting for him to show you the vent. Each communication tool has pluses and minuses. One of the biggest pluses of the VACList is exposure to a broad range of topics! I think this is great List community and simply wanted to provide a different communication tool!
Cheers,
Andy

VAC response
Andy,
I agree with you 100% on your reply to them, and the more I use your site the more I like it.

List Server
I agree as well, I enjoy getting the VAC list, but it is tedious to read, and often has little new info on it. I end up scrolling quickly and seeing the same messages over and over.
I enjoy the Yahoo groups sites, but I think this board will gice us an opportunity to hone in more on the areas of interest we want to focus on. AirstreamCentral has done that, although had some problems as many of us have witnessed.

Yahoo! Groups Announcement!
Yahoo! has changed their privacy policy. If you are a member of any Yahoo! Group, please take note of the following post that was sent to the AirstreamList.

Subject: If you have any yahoo group accounts
Hi folks, just thought I would pass this along, if you are not on any yahoo "groups" you likely do not need to do this. It is legitimate (see directions)
Remember when Yahoo went down for a few days? Well, here's one of the changes they implemented. Isn't that just so sweet, they signed us all up for lots of Spam (or at least it appears that is the plan).
Yahoo has added a "MARKETING" area to your account set up area of groups, and checked yes as the default setting. When you go into it you will see that they have set you to "YES" on everything. I highly advise everyone to go in and change it.
When you're logged in at Yahoogroups, click on `Account Info' on the top right corner of the screen. Enter your password when prompted, then below the listing of your email addresses, you'll see a link for "Edit Your Marketing Preferences", click on that. You'll see it's set to YES (please send me spam) on every option. Set them all to NO. Don't forget the two towards the bottom of the page about phone and snail mail spam. Click the button to save it.

Use of quote...
Hunter did not like my posting the quote above because it came from the "her" AirstreamList. It was not intended to steal content from "her" list. It was intended to provide fellow forum members who belong to any Yahoo! Groups list a notice of Yahoo!'s change in policy so you can protect your privacy. If Yahoo! notifies me that it is in violation of thier copywrite policy, I will remove it immediately...

Only In A List Serve
Q: How many internet mail list subscribers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: 1,331:
1 to change the light bulb and to post to the mail list that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently.
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.
27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs.
53 to flame the spell checkers
156 to write to the list administrator complaining about the light bulb discussion and its inappropriateness to this mail list.
41 to correct spelling in the spelling/grammar flames.
109 to post that this list is not about light bulbs and to please take this email exchange to alt.lite.bulb
203 to demand that cross posting to alt.grammar, alt.spelling and alt.punctuation about changing light bulbs be stopped.
111 to defend the posting to this list saying that we are all use light bulbs and therefore the posts **are** relevant to this mail list.
306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique, and what brands are faulty.
27 to post URLs where one can see examples of different light bulbs
14 to post that the URLs were posted incorrectly, and to post corrected URLs.
3 to post about links they found from the URLs that are relevant to this list which makes light bulbs relevant to this list.
33 to concatenate all posts to date, then quote them including all headers and footers, and then add "Me Too."
12 to post to the list that they are unsubscribing because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy.
19 to quote the "Me Too's" to say, "Me Three."
4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ.
1 to propose new alt.change.lite.bulb newsgroup.
47 to say this is just what alt.physic.cold_fusion was meant for, leave it here.
143 votes for alt.lite.bulb.

I am an active member of Hunter's list and while I commend her for success of that list, I think that sharing should be encouraged. I post there and here and I also have brought over some content which was appropriate.
Quite honestly one can quote or one can paraphrase and ideas and thoughts will cross to the list and to this forum. So why build walls? I hope Hunter will reconsider her thoughts. We are one big A/S family aren't we?
