Excited - 1965 Globetrotter
For two years now, I've been stopping by this old mans place where he had a 1965 Globetrotter, trying to buy it. It hadn't been for sale. He's owned it since 1983. Well, I stopped in last night, and he's decided to sell it. He paid $3000 for it in 1983; he showed me the papers. It's all original and in excellent shape. He asked me what I'd pay him for it....I offered him $2000 and he said no. I was hoping to get it for a decent price. I was about to offer him $2500 and then he said, " I can't take that much for it." I sat there, and he said, "How does $1000 sound?" Of course, I said yes! It'll be a couple weeks before we go get it, but we are excited. It'll be the wife's trailer, as we also have a 1985 34' Limited. To say the least, we are excited.

Congratulations. Good things happen to good people. Your offer was fair and to have it denied for a lower price is just great.
Now that you saved 1500 of your budget, you can use it to fix it up. (My wife hates it when I think like that)
We expect pictures at your first chance.
-Regards.

Wow! Your persistance really paid off this time. You're obviously the recipient of an amazingly generous offer from a gentleman who doesn't know realize he could be making thousands more on a vintage trailer in that shape.
Without sounding preachy, in my opinion you really owe him something extra for his fairness and old-fashioned integrity. Whether it's a $200 gift card to Home Depot (if he likes to tinker,) taking him out to a wonderful dinner (if he needs the friendship,) or surprising him with fresh-baked cookies for the next year (if he's got a sweet tooth,) it's obvioius you really have a wonderful opportunity to reward this man's kindness with something special... I hope you grab it!
Congrats~

Hey Rob! Good to see you posting here. You gave me the nudge to register and contribute to these forums rather than just lurking. I cant wait to see the new trailer. I pulled mine out of storage today.

Actually you sounded very preachy. Prehaps you are surrounded by people who need frequent reminders of how to be in the world. A gift suggested is only half given.

You gotta be kidding, right? Making a suggestion as to what might be a neat 'thank you' to the PO qualifies as "very preachy?"
I wonder if Rob and Zoe will think they've been lectured to. As far as I know I wasn't telling anyone how to act - simply curious as to if that's the end of the story.

Thanks, Norbs-
Golden rule, no biggie.
I'm unregistered for Moraine, and will be sans trailer, but will absolutely be there!! We'll show up, (hopefully to catch open house) and visit with everyone for a couple hours, I've already had the pleasure of meeting Silvertwinkie, and have been talking to Summerkid quite a bit about pooling our resources and creating a protected "home" for Chicagoland Airstreams. Let me know your parking spot, Melissa and I will stop in and say hello.
See you at Moraine... I suppose I'll be the only one with a picture of his trailer in his wallet.

Lectured too?
We don't feel lectured too. Actually, the old man is a former military man like myself. We've got a good relationship, and since I've been recalled to Actice Duty, I stop in on my way to and from home to say hello. Here's the rest of the story. His wife died back in the early 80's and his wife's daughter sold their 27 foot Airstream. This old man bought this Globetrotter and has had it since 1983. He told me that he has located the 27 footer, a 1967 model, and is going to go get it, and when he does, he's putting it in where his Globetrotter is sitting, and since I've been stopping and seeing him that he would sell it to no one other than myself. No one ever stops to see the old guy, and whenever I stop, I end up staying up to an hour on my trip talking with him. He gets alot out of it, as do I. We're going to restore the trailer, and he's excited about that too. I'm probably going to help him (he has no way to pull his 1967) move it when he's ready. I told him I'd help him with whatever he needed, as our Suburban can move just about anything.
Well, I also know of another man here local that has a 1964 Globetrotter. He's gutting it and making it into storage. He and I are working out a deal to get all the couches, tables, light fixtures, antennas, and even the front windows and all the screens. He wants around $250. You just have to ask! I've been stopping and talking to this guy for about a year now, a former Marine too - so we bonded instantly.
I'll get some pictures this weekend.

Fantastic. We would have loved to talk with the previous owner of our Globe, but they sold it to a middleman. That's so cool you have a relationship with this guy, I imagine it kinda makes having the trailer that much more interesting.
I'm sure he'll get a kick out of seeing you actually put it to some real, road-worthy use after all these years. This old man sounds hilarious... lives alone, never takes his trailers anywhere, doesn't live in 'em full time, but feels the necessity to trade up to something bigger.
Meanwhile Melissa are wondering where we're going to put 2 friends and ourselves in our GT for a long weekend.

Sentimental thing
He doesn't see it as trading up...just getting back the trailer that his wife's daughter sold for drug money! His '67 has been trashed, but he's going to bring it back to life! I'll probably help with what ever he needs, and help him find parts for it too, via the net.

Keeping up with the stories on this Forum is better than reading a shelf full of Chicken Soup books! Thanks for sharing the "rest of the story." You made my day, as you must have made many of the old man's. Good for you

In my neverending quest to make Maxwell "whole" I am always on the lookout for '64 GT's being parted out! IF this trailer has an original M35 Dometic fridge & IF it isn't working & IF it has the bottom shelf inside the door...I would LOVE to contribute towards the $250. Let me know...
I know Bredlo, you said you may have one too...but I'm always on the look out and will let everyone know when to stop looking
BTW...

No problemo! I still haven't gotten up to Wisconsin yet, but the weather is juuuust starting to get really nice in the Midwest... this weekend I think I'll take a digital camera, sketchpad and tape measure to start planning out this bad boy!

I think they're very good friends but if not, we'll be awful cozy after the first few nights. The girls are already threatening to make the boys sleep outside in a tent - seems hostile, but it may be the only way to keep my sanity!

Inside out
The fridge is still there and in tact. How do I know if it is original. He has the stove / oven - looks brand new. EMail me at bakerrh@2mardiv.usmc.mil and I'll let you know if this guy accepts my offer.

Another treasure - Out behind the barn!
Last night, another local here in sent me looking out in the boonies where he said two old Airstreams were setting. As I drove around, looking in the back yards, I came upon them...two parked end to end out behind a barn, one a 31 footer and the other looked like a 16-19 footer. It looked like no one was around, but I knocked on the door, and a young guy came to the door. I asked him about the Airstreams and he said the Yeah, I think my dad would sell the small one. Oh how I was eager to see what the small one was! I asked him if I could go out back and look at them. He said sure, and out the back door I was. A 1965 Caravel in great shape (needs tires) but all the interior in perfect shape, all windows there, even the aluminum jack stands. Well, the young guy gave me his dad's number, and I called him right up. A former Marine! What luck. I told him I'm interested, asked him what he wanted for it, and bought it on the spot. $2500. Now, the wife and I will both have an oldie, and both 1965 models. I can't wait to go get it. Next week, I'll go start getting her ready to hit the road.
