Does "currently online" mean that we're active on the forums site or does it mean that we're online anywhere on the net?

AirstreamForums only. It times out after a few minutes of inactivity, then refreshes as you navigate the forums again.

currently online applies to the members being logged in the forum, less the members who chose to be hidden.
If you visit another website with a second web browser window, you will remain online in the other window. After 15 minutes or so of inactivity your presence times out and you disappear from the online list.

I was partly wrong in my assumption.
You are 'currently online' until you either log out or time out. You can turn your computer off and still remain in the online list.
