It's only necessary if it isn't working properly and you can't trace and fix the problem. It's a 3 stage converter and the company has been producing converters for quite a while. They do produce a lot of converters for a lot of manufacturers, so there are bound to be some issues with some of the units. I know that other manufacturers have a better reputation, but I think this falls under the category "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - unless you have to have that bright, shinny new converter.
