Are you embarrassed by your Airstream?

Fortunately, I too enjoy talking about ours, and can handle semi-rude questions about cost, since we bought it well used.. It's almost fun watching some folks' faces fall when they realize they too coulda had an Airstream...
I agree . . . it is virtually impossible to escape a fuel stop un-noticed. Sometimes, I think a first generation Argosy can start even more questions. With my Minuet, I have gotten questions at fuel stops that have included: "Why is your Airstream painted?", "Did your Airstream come from the factory that way (painted)?", "Why would you paint a trailer as valuable as a Bambi?". The questions double when the tow vehicle is a collector car such as my '75 Cadillac Eldorado convertible. With that variable added to the combination, I get reactions such as: "My parents/grandparents towed their Airstream with a Cadillac.", "I thought that you had to tow with a truck.", "Isn't it difficult to tow a trailer with a car?". With my Vintage coaches, my response when asked about cost is that the original cost when new was $6,000. The effect of time between 1964 and 1978 is evident as the original purchase price on my 1964 Overlander was just a little more than $6,000 as was the price of my Minuet in 1978.

i tell them i don't know, it was a gift. :-)

That wasn't really necessary since Canada is invisible to most Americans anyway.

As for the question, how much did it cost? Plea old age and that you don't remember what you paid—actually, I don't remember.

So I finally picked up my 77' Excella 500 from the PO and when I parked her on a street to get her weight distributed two separate gentlemen came up...One very hippy like said "SHE'S SO COOL!!!!" the other guy asked "What year is she?". So it already started and yes got a bunch of honks and waves on the drive home. I guess I would be embarrassed if I didn't know know much about my AS but I am now a PROUD owner. You couldnt offer me a million dollars to take her off my hands since she's my first

"How much is it worth?"

"$100,000 but today only you can have it for $50,000 and I'll throw in the tow vehicle".

Ha ha ha you should see the looks you get.

How much? Well, according to the title, the original owner paid $xx,xxx in 1999 dollars." I don't tell them how much I paid for it 11 years later.

Actually, no non-airstreamer has asked for a tour of my 34' yet, although the few I've invited inside love the space.

Deciding it was a good time to check the relative bearing grease, I bailed out leaving my wife to entertain.
She reported that they observed loudly to one another that though it was very cute on the outside, it was exceeding cramped on the inside. Wondering out loud why we had such a tiny trailer they made a hasty departure back to their humongously, huge fifth-wheel.
Very, very funny story, Alumaholic!! I really did LOL!

I have to update on this. A few weeks back I traveled up to Tampa to the RV show and took Alumination. On the way, I was startled by someone blowing the horn. I thought something was wrong and then I realized that they were waving on and with thumbs up. They certainly have a unique shape on the road. Ehh, iconic like Harley right?

My wife had been asking for an RV. I told her the only way we would get one was if we found a vintage Airstream that I could polish. We bought the 1961 Overlander and I love it. We have only been able to use it twice so far, but each time it has attracted people at the state parks. I love it and would not trade it for a new one. I enjoy showing it off and I can't wait to put a mirror shine on it.

Over the last two years every time we take it out some will ask to see it. there are two times that stand out. the first time we were turning into a Burger King and I noticed people on the sidewalk looking at us ase we tunred in so I waved at them but got no responce. I relized they were looking at our Airstream. The second time, there was about eight of us WBCCIers at an Ohio state park together. A young couple was walking by and looking at all the Airstreams, they had never seen so many in one spot, they asked if the big red numbers were rental numbers. I explaned about the WBCCI, that peaked their interest and they ask to see inside. I was happy to show them because I had just finnished renovating the inside of our 1987 25' Soveriegn.

A sportswriter once wrote the NHL plays 82 games to eliminate the Maple Leafs from the playoffs. At least they don't have as dumb a name as the Denver team.

I'm only embarrassed by having my AS sit in the yard so long during restoration! The neighbors ask, "So, are you going camping in it this year?" Ouch! Once the 8 inches of snow melts off and I can finish the interior painting job, I'll get her hitched up!

We have only had the Albatross out five times since her maiden voyage the end of July 2012 and we get constant comments, stares, people walking around her at all hours making comments to themselves and requests to look inside. We don't mind it a bit but drives the dogs nuts. Kind of fun to listen to what they think they know about Airstreams....heck, I'm still learning every day.
