Aluminum Oxidation

What do you use to clean oxidation off of aluminum, particularly on trim around doors and compartments? Thanks.

Welcome Aboard!! 👍

You're AS has a protective coating applied by Alcoa, unless the coating has been removed it should not oxidize.

Filiform is a more common corrosion concern with Airstreams.

Oxidation is the "dull" finish aluminum gets when it does not have wax or clear coat holding the finish shinny. It in itself is not bad for the aluminum. It is what an anodized aluminum airplane uses to keep the plane from corroding, with some success. However on the airstream areas around doors, sheets, and rivet heads often loose the clear coat that was applied on the sheets before assembly. Salt, water, dirt, etc work on those areas and cause the corrosion noted on the previous post. Washing the unit will help prevent that corrosion. We also wax it once clean.

If it is truly oxidation around the doors then the wax with "cleaning" or "polishing" will remove the oxidation. AND could with aggressive application likely open up more area without the clear coat and make a bigger problem.

We have small spots of true oxidation from beach use in CA and now FL. Nothing bigger around than a nickel and appears to be areas where the clear coat was missing or wore off. Are we better off just leaving it alone and keep washing / polishing as usual? If I understand with more aggressive removal we'll just take off more clear coat and the problem will get worse instead of better?
