We saw a great rig heading NE on 94 in Michigan this AM. It looked like a 2500 towing a 25' Classic, 80's vintage. The truck had a couple of bikes mounted on the cap and a scooter on the Airstream bumper. heading home from a winter South? Only Airstream we saw from Edmonton to Burlington. But then it was -18 in Fargo.

We saw 4 this weekend! The Natchez Trace is a Gold Mine for spotting Airstreams. A widebody 34' Limited was headed North out of Natchez as we were going south (we saw it again today camped at Rocky Springs), a newer 30+-' looped thru the campground at Natchez State park yesterday. On the way home we saw a long 70's headed south on the Trace at Clinton and as we drove thru Rocky Springs there was a real nice newer unit that we waved at.

Fun with some vintage ones

Okay, these weren't actually on the road, but got really excited to see these vintage ones together in Nevada City, CA.

What you might have seen were the members of WBCCI Unit 6 leaving Grand Gulf State Park. We had a Unit Spring rally with 15 Airstreams present including one from Canada, two from Lousiana and a couple from Alabama. The rest were from Mississippi.

We just saw a gorgeous new Flying Cloud headed south on I-75 with Ohio plates, straight from the factory we bet! Headed to a dealer? To a lucky new owner? It was being towed by a truck with "professional mover" magnets.

Saw two this weekend. One at the dump station at Elk Neck State Park in Maryland, towed by a Jeep, Friday. The other was today on I-695 outer loop heading toward the Key Bridge, pulled off to the side of the road (hope everything was okay - we were going the other way or we would've stopped).

This is a good trip for sightings. Just saw what looked like a late 70s single axle westbound on I-10 mile marker 132 between Lafayette and Baton Rouge, LA

We saw a sovereign rotting in a muffler shop yard in New Iberia yesterday. That brings us to one a day so far, with two functioning.

Btw, "it's my cousins airstream and I could've sold it a hundred times, but he's a deadhead and I don't know what he wants to do with it"

Airstream sightings

Spotted what appeared to be a late 1980s early 1990s 28' or larger Airstream headed up the on-ramp to Interstate 24 East from the Western Kentucky Welcome Center in Paducah, KY on Friday afternoon about 2 PM.

Airstream sightings

I recently celebrated my 70th birthday. My wife and I have the good fortune of being basically healthy and able to continue our airstream travel adventures. However, I am humbled when I think of an example we observed two summers ago at a campground on the Oregon Coast.

Late afternoon and in came two rigs of similar type. Older 1980 era 3/4 ton cargo vans towing vintage airstreams of about 30 feet length. The vans were showing their age as were the airstreams with a few nicks and dents but nothing extreme. They sounded and seemed to run well. Both rigs approached back in sites with the vans being driven by elderly ladies accompanied by equally elderly men. The men both got out of the vans with some difficulty and directed the drivers back into the sites.

They backed in leaving the vans connected to the Airstreams and simply put down stabilizers and opened the doors and windows and sat in one airstream taking it easy and enjoying each other's company.

After a while the men got out and hooked up full utilities while it looked like dinner was being prepared. They ate and promptly all closed up the rigs going in for the night by which time it was dark.

The next morning I walked over and had a cup of coffee and a chat with the two men as they sat outside in the morning sunshine. Turned out they were old friends who had grown up together, lived near each other and raised families together all while Airstreaming as a family pastime. They had owned other RVs prior to the Airstreams. They had bought their Airstreams in the early seventies and been traveling together since. They were all four in their early eighties.

One of the men used a cane to get around and neither moved very fast but they were doing it with grace and enjoyment while helping each other get all the camping tasks done. Between the four of them they were still doing it well.

I was impressed!

Whenever I feel a bit down or my mild arthritis acts up I try to recall the example these folks gave me. Today, my goal is to be doing what they did as long as I can. Using the Airstream, or any RV for that matter I suppose, is a healthy activity that can help keep us going longer and in better health. All it requires is that we learn to pace ourselves consistent with our health and conditions and control the risks of driving and maneuvering these rigs down the highways.

I intend to leave my son a well used truck and Airstream which I hope he will appreciate and continue with.

I don't feel it but my friends do now insist I am officially an "old fart".

I'm 61 and just got my first Airstream, 2008 Classic 25. What I'm worried about as I get old is staying healthy and strong enough to hitch it up! The darn head on my Equalizer seems to weigh a ton or I'm a wimp! I need to add some upper body exercises.

Hitch weight

They are heavy so mine stays on my truck most of the time. It only comes off when I need to tow my utility trailer with a 2" ball.

Isn't that why we have grandchildren? To help us with the 'heavy lifting'?

I belong to a WBCCI unit in SW Florida.
Recently, one of our members sold her renovated vintage 25' AS and retired from camping.
She did all the renovation work herself, except for the hot water heater replacement
She travelled alone. Hitched up herself, backed into camp sites herself, did everything herself.
BTW, she is in her mid-80s and looks like the sweetest white haired grandmother I ever saw.

She makes me believe there is still hope for younger geezers like me.
