One of the questions sure underestimated how much we use our Airstreams.
Life and our Airstream life is what we make of it. We were on the road for Columbus Day week-end and recognized some other "Silver Twinkies" out there. Sure had fun!

Any suggestion as to what to wear or say when I do the next two surveys?
Your birthday suit. THAT will get their attention.

I didn't think the survey was too bad, about what one would expect. I used it as a chance to give them some honest feedback from someone who has owned two of their products.
I have replied to several surveys from various companies - I rarely hear anything back, and don't expect to. I hope none of you are holding your breath....

I would have preferred that one worded differently...more like "how many nights do you spend in your Airstream per year" rather than how many "times"...how long is a "time"?

Maybe only three "times", but three weeks each time would be 60+ nights! Very different IMO.

Hi Shari

If I remember correctly I actually put the number of nights. I guess I should read these things a little bit better before I punch in an answer.

Opps...sorry! I had logged into Mr.InsideOut's computer so I could go look at the survey (once you take the survey you can't look at it again) for that last post #43...

We take ours out 1-3 times a month from May - Oct but not much (if at all) during the winter months. On average, we spend 30-40 nights out per year but have spent as many as 70. I believe I answered "About once a month" - but I don't think that is truly accurate - Airstreams are not ideal for winter travel around here.

There wasn't a place to make additional notes on this question...below is a screen shot of the question.

I hit the once a week bullet, trying to reflect that I camped in the trailer about 50 nights a year average since we completed it. I guess I should have considered that I don't use it every week for official camping - but there wasn't any other way to reflect 50 nights a year.

At the very end there was a box for additional info and I made a number of suggestions and in my commentary noted that we used it over 8 months for about 50 camping days/nights a year.

If they had asked the question in a different way they would have gotten far more accurate responses on usage, as you noted. So my answer will be flawed, but it correctly reflects the number of nights a year we camp.

I do not think the point of the survey was to make a better product or find out how much we use our trailers, I feel the survey was to find out how THEY can sell us more stuff to go with our trailers. I think they want to cash in on the reputation of the product to sell the image. How many Harley shirts are worn by folks that haven't even ridden on one. The question about what stores would you expect to find their product... that was a give away for me. I responded that I only expected to find them in an Airstream Store. I told the survey to look to the past. The future is always lurking in the past. Find out why the product has been around all these years and capitalize on that. Start making trailers the way they use to be made. Go back to real wood products, aircraft grade aluminum, build them to last forever. The money is in the trailers in my eyes, not the thermos mugs and cheap t- shirts. I worry that the waters will become diluted with too much "stuff". I am glad that I have my legacy trailer and that is something that cannot be diluted by a bunch of trinkets.

Hello.
My name is Keith McVaney and I am managing the Airstream Owner Survey for Airstream Inc.
Thanks to all who completed the survey - the response has been terrific and the feedback excellent.
Unfortunately we are not able to talk to everyone who offered to participate in the follow up interviews simply because there were so many of you who offered to help.
However, I am in the process of contacting a number of members based on where they live, the model they own and how they typically use their Airstream.
Thanks again for helping us out and I look forward to meeting some of you soon.

Keith,

the invitation still stands, the California Streamers are having a forums rally in Kernville, California in several weeks, and you'll learn more in a long weekend than you ever thought possible.

here is the link: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f288...lly-34550.html

subjects at our rallies:

cocktail hour upon arrivial
cocktail hour upon setting up
cocktail hour, well at cocktail hour
horse douvers
exchange decorating tips
just why do we require so much wood
just what does happen in a bauxite love shack after dark?

and

what happens at a rally, stays at a rally

It's much appreciated that you have responded and put a "voice/face/keyboard" on the survey. IMHO your response lends a tremendous amount of credibility to the whole effort.

Thank you,
Barry

I also have had NO reply and I also offered some constructive thoughts and opinions that they probably didnt want to hear . So I will probably never hear anything. I was nice and chose my words carefully. Like someone said previously they probably dont want to hear anything from those of us who have Vintage Units, they probabley only care about what they have out there that are under warranty and may come back to bite them.

I suspect those of us who don't have new rigs or expressed interest in buying "branded" crap will ever hear from them again.

I spoke with Keith McVaney today and we had a good conversation. We discussed the quality issues (e.g. leaks and corrosion), my Quiksilver and the more recent DWR Bambi, and Airstream in general.

He seems to be a nice enough fellow and said that he had been talking with a wide range of 'streamers - both old and new. There is no way to tell how the survey will affect Airstream's products but Keith is certainly aware that Airstream has a quality problem.

Any sense from Mr. Mcvaney of what Airstream is really trying to accomplish with this survey? Just wondering if is to assess the feasibility of branding more foreign made trinkets with their name? To actually tackle quality control issues? Or to determine whether they can sucessfully start a AS club of their own?

I'm still waiting by the phone in my blue beret for a chance to input further. I'd even do it for free, and meet them halfway if they're only going to survey the northeast.

The real targeted owners

A more appropriate request:
Airstream, Inc wants to hear from you if you own a late model unit and like Airstream merchandise, please take a moment to fill in

*RANT ALERT*
I don't know what model trailer that is on the survey header, but it sure looks vintage to me. Its interesting that AS doesn't seem interested in what owners of the vintage units have to say, but they are fast enough to take advantage of the cool factor. Maybe they forget that the only reason vintage units are out there making AS look good because of the time, money, and effort of the vintage owners. If they were smart, they would be working harder to come up with restoration items or at the very least providing those of us polishing our units polishing supplies at cost. Every trip I have taken, people come up and ask me about the camper, and every time the topic of whether they still make them comes up. Maybe we should all start answering: "sorta, but not really".

I agree. My other obsession are old Mercedes cars. MB supports their vintage models impeccably, they even opened a classic center near me, much to the dismay of my bank account.
Their parts prices are reasonable, and they can get just about every little thing in a matter of days, if it is not in stock.
Now, I fully undersand that Aristream does not have the magnitute of financial resources that Mercedes Benz has, but on the other hand, they don't have near as many parts to worry about, either.
I thin that if Airstream did have a factory vintage center, with trained technicians, it would be a money maker, and huge image maker for them.
Instead, they ignore the vintage crowd and go on their way by riding on our efforts.

I totally agree Uwe, and with you too, General. Airstream could garner more positive press and gain an untapped market if they offered more services and support to vintage owners. A local service tech trying to help me come up with a part made a call to Jackson Center only to be told "we don't support coaches that old". He was stunned.

Airstream would not have as desirable a market position today if not for the reputation built from coaches years past. I have to ask myself, why would I want to buy a new coach from a company that won't support its older units still in service. Is it a problem that the goods made by Airstream 50 +/- years ago were so durable that they are still on the road today? It wouldn't hurt for Aistream to examine Mercedes Benz's model for vintage service.

I think it is ironic that Airstream likes to brag about the percentage of all the trailers they have built being on the road today, but doing very little to support the trailers and the owners that make that number a reality.
