Smile 1962 Globetrotter I think?

Hello airstreamers!
I’ve been bouncing around the airforum website for a few days now and quite frankiy the amount of info is overwhelming and a bit scary.
What it tells me is that i have no idea what i’m doing! Yet i want to jump in anyway.

A friend has been kind enough to give me their old airstream that has been sitting on a mountain side for the past 25 years. She is adorable but in major need of help. My husband and i are going upstate this week to jack up the body and have a look to see if the bottom is at all in tact and if we are able to move her. We’ll bring several jacks and hopefully the axel is ok and we can just change the tires and roll her down the mountain. Driving her all the way to long island will have to wait till we get her checked out by a local garage.

My question to you experienced airstream folks is do you have any advice before we do irreparable damage?

I don't think it's a 60s model globetrotter. More likely a 1958-ish 18 footer made in OH

Regarding towing it out... a flat tow would be a better bet but regardless of what you do - that's a cool trailer and worth saving!

I'd also take some bearing grease. If any moisture got into the bearings you'll want to clean them up a bit. Also check running lights while you're there.

If you can't flat bed it home get some towing lights (I'm assuming the lights don't work).

Good luck, keep us posted

Kinda hard to tell by your pic but this does look earlier and possibly more in the late 50's. The Vin ( 0 2230) should give you a better idea but sorry I cannot help other than mine is 18-4092 but is California made. Maybe someone else can

Thanks, Helga
The serial number O2230 confirms you have a 1958 18' Globetrotter. Other visible details agree, such as the tail light design last used in 1958.

Please keep in mind there are numerous items that are specific to a '58. These items would be nearly impossible to replace so take great care when working on it. One of those would be the fiberglass cover for the overhead light it being a one year only!
Check the link in my signature, you mind find it helpful.

Have the brakes checked before towing. When i pulled mine out of the weeds I greased the bearings but did not know how to inspect brakes. Some parts were loose and jammed in towing. You may be able to find an experienced tow person to bring it to you.

This one may or may not have Brakes since it should weigh around 2,100 Lbs. Mine had Hydraulic Brakes with a cave man style disconnect linkage. I replaced my axle with a new Dexter made with electric brakes.

The documents prairieschooner posted are for the 1959 model year, which started Oct 1, 1958, not the 1958 model year. The Globtrotter in question is a 1958 model that was probably built in the first half of 1958, though we don't know the exact build date.

Even so that is the best I could find before and hopefully would be helpful

If there is something better please post it.
