A good place to begin gathering information on 1956 Airstreams is RJ's web site:

Enjoy.

Yes they were made. I have a 30' 1956 awaiting restoration. It is nearly identical to the 55 Commodore Vanderbuilt except it has the large picture windows on each side over the center twins too. Really cool layout and TONS of natural light.

Stay tuned in about 6 mos or so when I tackle the body off resto!

Question another 56

my husband and I have just bought a 56 AS, 22 ft trailer. Doesn't have a model designation. Just an Airstream tag with the four digit number...starting with 8.
It has the bed in back with a huge spare tire trunk accessible from the outside. Everything is original, except the toilet. Were there a lot of one off's in '56? I am asking because the dinette...is obviously original, but looks nothing like any other pictures I have seen. Also it is a TWO-DOOR. is this common with 22 footers? I have searched and found none so far in the photos (exception being the longer trailers).

Well, I'm off to more reading and soon a ton of cleaning. Thanks for the forum, I have lurked for a while, just had to actually join!

Hi Dusty! Glad you decided to join. Be sure to post some pictures of your new toy in the photo album when you have a chance. It sounds like a rare bird to me, but I'm no expert. The two doors certainly sounds exotic. Either way, it sounds like a nice find. Once you get camping in it, maybe we'll see you at a rally sometime!

Friend of mine here in town has a 1959 22'er with a second door as well. Funny thing about this one is its a half door and its over the streetside bed. Looks to be factory done.

This is factory done too, both doors on the same side, front is in the usual 22'r spot, the rear is in the bedroom at the back. looks almost like the 29 foot 2 door but smaller...if that makes sense. it's a full size door, screen and all.

Any info on any other models like this would be appreciated....I'll post pics in the next week or two.
