Wheel well repair

Had a blow-out, which sent pieces of tire through the plastic wheel well into the storage area beneath the bed in our '79 Argosy Minuet. If I can pound the well back into shape, is there a material I can use to patch the holes? Is it better/possible to replace the entire wheel well?

HI Steven, That depends. How bad is your wheel well damaged ? You may be able to fix it by fiberglassing it. I don't think you can get new ones. I have metal wheel wells on my trailer, one of which suffered a blowout. I was able to reshape it. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Keep us posted. I don't know much about the 1979 models. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks Chris,

I think I can pound it back into shape and patch it with something like fiberglass or bondo, assuming that sticks to plastic. It's been a while since I've looked at the damage, but tomorrow will be the day.

I'll see how it looks and report back.

Hi Steven -- Welcome to the Forums!

Don't have a picture but a plastic wheelwell liner on my Argosy had two problems -- a puncture and about a 7" crack coming up from one edge. I shaped a piece of aluminum sheet and pop riveted it over the areas with Sikaflex 221 caulk to seal the edges. Silicone caulk will not work up against aluminum. You'd never notice the patches unless looking real hard.

Here is a picture of a similar repair I did on my wheelwell over 4 years ago, once finished I spray painted the aluminum black, I used vulcum it has held up great.

Sheet metal and pop rivets

seem to be the consensus. I'll give that a try today. Thanks everybody!
