Fender Skirts

Does anybody have any information on the construction of the fender skirts that were on the 1950's era Airstream's? I have a 1950 liner and would like to have the fender skirts made but have no clue as to the construction, how they were attached, thickess, etc. Any info on these would be a big help.

Thanks,

Tom

I don't recall seeing them on an Airstream, although there is a Spartan in our shop with fender skirts. They are constructed with the same aluminum sheets as the skin of the trailer, with mounts riveted tot he back of them, and a hook-shaped hinge/mount at the bottom. There is a locking latch with a lever to keep the skirt attached at the top. The ones at the shop are buried somewhere in the warehouse, I'll try to take a couple of photos if I can find them.

The 47 Curtis I am working on has 'em. If you want pics and info let me know. Your wheel well cut outs look to be rounder than mine.

fender skirt photos

Tom,
Here are two pictures showing the skirt....on and off. Real simple. Istraight piano hinge....riveted to the body, rolled skirt to match the shape of the body with a break along the bottom for strength. I plan on thread sets with an aircraft cowling type fastener instead of the sheet metal screws that are on it. Also i will look at a "J" extrusion along that bottom break just for added strength.

(P.S. I copied my tail light directly from you.)
