Maxxair Vent cover install on OEM vent

I am trying to install one of these Maxxair Vent covers on my 81. The OEM vent has round corners and the mounting brackets don't have any place to go if I use the mounting holes in the vent flange. I guess I am going to have to mount the brackets farther inboard where they will be on the flat portion of the vent housing. I could just drill new holes in the plastic flange (cracks) or make a bar that spans the reinforced mounting points. I was wondering if anyone had done something similar and how that worked.

I ran into the same issue a couple months ago when I installed mine. I attached the brackets toward the rear of the vent covers using the included bolts. The brackets on the front end I (dare I say) attached directly to the roof. I also used a good deal of polyurethane sealant so it oozed out on all sides of the bracket when tightened down. Since these holes are sealed so well AND are also under the vent cover, I don't expect any issues.

However, if I were to do it again I might use solely the sealant Lewster recommends for attaching solar panels.
