How does one fix a chalky white roof on a 1999 Excella?

I was talking to some Airstream friends about painting my roof because of the oxidation running down the sides every time it rained and one of them told me to use "NuFinish" polish. I haven't tried it yet, and probably won't if it has silicones in it but I haven't had time to check it out.


The person who recommended it to me has always been spot on with recommendations.

Your post prompted me to check if NuFinish has silicones. It does. Their FAQ says it will not cause "fish eyes" in new paint if proper silicone removal processes are used, but I thought you couldn't remove silicones once applied. More research required.

I had a similar problem on my white roof, including som dark grey/black spotting that looked like it had been het with hail but no dents. Tried scrubbing off with several different cleaners and had no luck. Had a brainwave and tried some Fast Orange hand cleaner on a shop towel. It worked!! Was a big job and took a couple of days, but marks came off, shine returned and life is good!! Gave the white roof a coat of Simonize wax and it looks great. While I was up on the roof, I resealed anything that looked suspect of becoming a leak, cleaned the skylight and MaxxAir covers, and blew out the A/C cooling fins.
