What is it?

I am restoring a 66 Overlander and I found something I am not sure if I need or not. It is just on the inside of the rear bumper outside the frame rails. It is a verticle tube that is split with an adjuster lever. It looks like a tube will clamp into it, but I am not sure of the use. Any ideas?? Thanks, TomE.

I believe that is/was a stabilizer jack. There would have been another piece that would rest on the ground and then this would clamp onto it.

We had them on our '63 Overlander.
They are made to hold stabilizer bars. The rod (stabilizer bar) goes through it, drops to the ground, and the clamp holds it from sliding up and down when the trailer moves.

I have a pipe just like that only metal on each side of the rear rear bumper and the PO told me that another PO used it to insert poles for a clothesline. If it was up front it could have been a flag pole holder...

I had a bike rack with a couple of very rotting pieces of 2x4. What is it about using wooden blocks, I wonder?

Well, the stabilizer jack makes sense. I don't remember seeing any of the other parts in my pile-o-stuff. I do however have four adjustable aluminum jacks that kind of look like automotive jack stands. I am wondering if the PO may have used these instead of the stabilizers? I will probably leave them off at this point, I can always add them later if I need a little more stabilizing. Thanks, TomE
