Thumbs up Bumper storage re-attachment

Forum search failed to address re-attaching the lid on rear bumper storage on 2013 International fb. During our cold morning escape from Eastern WA to AZ, the cover detached from the storage compartment, it looks like it was attached with two sided tape strip. My first thought was, why not drill and use sheet metal screws, wouldn’t that be more secure? What am I missing? BTW we love our Airstream, getting pressure to consider moving to Sprinter Van for ease of driving, and less maintenance, oh the joys of aging!

The same thing happened years ago on our 2002 19' I pop-riveted the hinge back in place and that has held ever since. The head of the pop rivets had to be on the inside of the hinge to have adequate clearance for the lid to close.

If your lid is the same as ours, you need to consider where the points of any screws would end up.

Better yet: Use Olympic Rivets..... so the back of them will butterfly out -- kind of like a wall anchor.

Olympic rivets would be okay to attach the hinge to the storage compartment. Allowing the lid to close requires that the low-profile heads of the rivets are inside the hinge (see attached illustration). Doing so with olympic rivets joining the lid to the hinge would leave the butterfly of the rivet visible on the outside when the lid is closed.
