Bumper lid replacement

I need to replace the black lid (I'd call it a flap) on the bumper compartment for hose and electric. I found the part on High Sky but it's not clear how that gets replaced.

I'm thinking it comes with a big adhesive piece that will attach it to the "piano hinge" that is still present.

Does anyone have experience with this that you'd like to share?

Feel free to send me a link if this has been addressed elsewhere on the forum. I looked but didn't see quite this issue.

THANKS for your generosity with your expertise!

I suspect it was pop riveted to the hinge. That's how it was done on my '70 Safari. Then again, maybe Airstream came up with a new way on more recent models.

I don’t know how yours was made or attached. But we made the lids for both bumper trunks on our 66 and 55. We purchased 3/16” aluminum sheet from Westbrook Metals in San Antonio (there’s also one in Austin), made a pattern and cut the aluminum with a saber saw and metal blade. We filed and dressed up the edges. Then, riveted to the piano hinge and installed a handle. Not difficult. Good luck

Just looked at my '99 25 safari. Appears to be attached with a 2 sided tape of some sort. Not riveted or welded. You might try a 3M tape like they use for solar panel attachment.

Thanks a ton. Yes, it is some kind of adhesive. I may try cutting my own piece as another user suggested.

You can find the correct aluminum at "Aircraft Spruce" on line. I used a shear and a brake to do mine (1964 Safari) then I buck riveted the lid to the hinge (never falling off). You can do it with hand tools.

If yours is missing. perhaps the adhesive tape they used failed.

And if you are not going to rivet it to your hinge. You might at least want to look into the 3M tapes, They are very good.

Here are a couple photos.
