Tweeked Steps

We recently bought an 2007 Safari and the steps are tweeked. They work but need some swearing to get them pull out sometimes. How would you fix this?:

REPLACE THEM!

Unless you are VERY GOOD with metal and are able to remove the steps, re-shape to the original pattern and then re-install them, they will never work as original. They don't cost that much and I'm sure you will spend the better part of a day messing with them and get sub-standard results. What is you time worth?

In relation to your other post about the hole. The angle of the bend in the step matches with the impact to the side wrap.
I'm with Lew just replace the steps. I have tried in the past to repair bent steps on several rental units and they never come out as good as new.

We're in Alaska. What brand of steps do u recommend and where can I buy a good set of steps?

Airstream in Jacksonville Center stocks and sells them.

Could be wrong, but I don't think that's something a dealer would keep in stock...

I appreciate the advice, seems a new step is the best choice. I'm sourcing a step and, barring problems, come spring they'll be mouted. Thank you for yr help.

Thanks, now I don't feel so stupid about what I did to mine. Guess I'll look at CW first. Might be in Ohio in Jan. Are these easy to install for a do-it-yourselfer?

Camping world sells them. They just don't sell that color.

I bent mine and then using a chain, sledge and another tow vehicle I got them mostly straight and they work fine.

I had the same problem with Lucy's steps. The still worked but were crooked. I recently got a new set at Camping World. They have a curved front, and I like them much better than the originals. The CW Catalog number is 37039, and the Club price is $69.99

By agreement with it's dealers, Airstream will not sell repairs parts to someone unless they are in Jackson Center.

Dealers many times order parts that they normally don't stock, and then have them "dropped shipped" to the customer.

However, the purchase must be a certain minimum amount, and if not, Airsteam adds a "handling charge", because of the paper work involved. Typically, that amount could be as high as $200.00, exclusive of shipping or tariffs.

Great tip at Camping World. Mine are bent also and in my shop where I am trying to figure out how to straighten. I can do it but it is going to be way easier to put on a new set at $70.

Anyone can buy anything from Airstream, "BUT" they MUST be in Jackson Center.

If that person is "NOT" in Jackson Center, then the answer is "NO".

That's why you see many things in their store, but only a limited number of them can be purchased via the phone and shipped out.

This is as per the dealer agreement that Airstream has with it's dealers.

Airstream requires dealers to stock a certain dollar level of parts. They then, work with the dealers, so as not to compete with them, "EXCEPT" when that person is in Jackson Center.

Why not have a try at fixing them before spending $$ on a new set? If you are prepared to buy new anyway, then no harm done if, in the worst case, you make the ones you have worse! instead of better!

You should be able to see what is bent or misaligned and some judicial bending or hammering with a soft faced hammer may well do the trick - you may not even have to dismantle them.

I managed to bugger ours up by leaving them down while pulling away from our driveway and ripped up several feet of sod along the curb!

Steps wouldn't work after that and I was pretty mad at my stupidity!

I had a go at them along the lines I described and they are fine again now. Not even any evidence of my mishap!

Mine are the aluminum double folding stype, but should be the same to fix the steel ones - maybe easier.

IF you have the shop and or heating type equipment and a big hammer and an anvil. Id GOT FOR IT. You dont have anything to loose. They dont work anyway so ya aint out nuffin. SO WHAT if ya wind up replacein em,you was gonna have too anyway.
