Repair, don't replace steps

Our double steps broke on 2005 25' International. The 3/8" X 26" pivot rod sheared off, eliminating support on one side. One day our steps just felt flimsy and looked kinda drunk. You can see in this picture how crooked they are.

We decided we didn't want to add a bunch of steel to the junkyard somewhere, so we committed to trying to repair this. Turned out easier than we expected. the failure was the sheared pivot rod here, it is supposed to go through that hole but is now too short and the step kinda flops around when we step on it.

We bought a 3' piece of 3/8" steel rod. Sawed out the old pivot rod, ground off the welds, cleaned up the holes and slipped new rod through. Decided to pin the new rod from the inside of each flat washer. The rod is free to rotate and might wear more evenly than when it was tack-welded into wearing on one face only.

Steps are level, no longer are flimsy. Cost was $5 for the rod. Used a pair of 4d finish nails for pins, had the flat washers already. Re-used our original steps instead of junking them. (and yeah, I'll be painting down there soon) Successful repair!

Great repair job. Will keep this idea in mind if ours breaks.
