Help with front steps '69 Sovereign Intl.

I am repairing the front step frame and outriggers I can't figure out what holds the step in the up position. Any help or pictures of the mechanism would be greatly appreciated.

On a 68 there is a piece of metal with a handle formed into it that spans between the two sides. It is right under the door frame. When the steps go up, it holds them up. You pull out, the metal flexes, and the steps drop down. Looks to me like that piece on your steps has rusted off. I can send you a pic if you would like. 69 steps may be different so let's see what others share, but the steps look the same as my 68. I don't really have any idea on how to fix it.

It appears you are missing the latch assembly. There should be a handle on the right side of the step.
This handle is spring loaded. At the back of the slot on each outrigger there should be a latch which is operated by said handle mechanism.
When you raise the step up to the store position. The pin on each rear arm (which slides in the slot) snaps behind the latch on each side.
You press down on the release handle which rotates the latch assembly and the step drops down.
At the back of each slot there should be a latch. Kinda looks like the trigger on a gun. There should also be a casting or square shaft just below the floor. Which connects each side of the latch to the release handle.

The latch/catch is missing. It is a hinged metal bar across the top that has tabs/handles on both ends to lift in order to let the steps down or stow them for travel.

Bellastream,
Just got home and checked forum. The pic 65will posted shows that his step look just like the steps on my 68. The top piece with the finger grip is springy. When you pull it out the steps drop down. If you notice there is a thin slot cut int the top of the part which allows the handle to pull out just a little. It does take a good tug on the top part to get the steps to drop (my wife always has trouble). But, it is a very positive hold and I've never had the steps drop down on their own.
If you do need more pics send me a PM and I'll email some to you as I always have trouble posting pics.

1968 step latch

The spring metal that latches the step in place is starting to crack. It is only a matter of time and it is going to break all the way through. When this happens I will no longer be able to latch my step up for travel. Anyone know if this is being reproduced or know of a source that could make a new piece? Thanks for any help.
