2nd step

On the face of our 66 Safari step, on both sides is a 7/8" square hole, they are at the outside edge of the step. . It occurred to me that it may be for a second step to be slid into, so I tried a piece of 3/4" bar stock and it slid right in. Did AS make a second step that was an add on? The wife, because of her knees, needs a second step, and rather than use a crate to step up on , I thought it might be that this is the answer. If anyone knows and/or if anyone has a pic of how this works I would greatly appreciate a little help. It looks like an easy fab. but sometimes things are not what the appear to be...
Thanks as always
Barry & Karen in Mi.

At the Airstream site they have copies of some of the original price lists. One of the options available was (1967) Auxiliary Main Step Extension. It was $7...

I have one. I will trade for AS parts or tig welding... or, you can look at it to copy. It folds flat for storage. Ann Arbor near UM Hospital.

I would love to take some measurement off your step if you don't mind. Sorry I am new to airstreams so don't have parts, and I also don't tig, but might be able to find someone to help you. If you don't mind please drop me an email so we can make arrangements.
Thanks a million,
Barry & Karen in Mi.

Barry,

Here are two pages from the 1974 Service Manual that show detail and give instructions for the steps.

Hope this helps you.

Unfortunately, the mid 60s Airstreams used a steel single step that is different.

Great scans and nice of you. I just hope I can remember how to find them when someone needs help with the aluminum two step model (not to be confused with country dancing models ).
