Suitable belt and lower trim molding inserts
So, I am really tired of the chrome molding inserts and their complete lack of durability. I have searched high and low for a solid, molded in, color replacement, with no luck. My thought a light or dove gray would look nice with the aluminum.
All I can come up with is black as seen in the link.
https://sportwing.com/Extruded-Moldings?page=1&size=-1
Does anyone have experience painting these moldings and can offer advice?
Has anyone run across like moldings in colors? Gray specifically?
The European profiles about mid page in 5/8" and 1" are the size requirements.

Rich,
How about one with a stainless insert...give 'em a call, see if they have something that will work for you.

Thanks, Bob
I did search many of the marine vendors, but have not seen the flat back profile with a 3M adhesive application. I'll call. Do you know if these are black with stainless insert?

Yes, black backing. They also have a white insert.

Well, after many calls, I have found and ordered what I think will work.
Vehicle Graphics - 1 in. Body Side Molding by Precision Trim
The Sheer Silver is the brightest color and it is molded in color. This color was used by Chevy and Toyota in recent years and I am familiar with it. (see it in my avitar) I had a truck in this color last year. They don't list the 5/8" molding but they can and did order to from the manufacturer for me. Bulk rolls are more than I need, but cost little more than buying by the 5' increment.
The 1" is part #11100 and is $165 for 100'
The 5/8" is part number 37130 and is $122 for a 130' roll. (pretty sure I'll have enough left over for a 25' or smaller AS, if anyone is interested.)
Won't be here for a couple weeks due to the special order, but I'll post pics of the match (or lack thereof) then. Probably won't install till next spring though....no sense letting it sun rot in winter storage.

What adhesive is used, is the key to the insert longevity.
The 3M super weatherstrip adhesive, is always the best bet.
If the insert falls off, it's not the insert problem, but it would be the adhesive problem.

Perfectly. No surface peeling nor fading. No peeling away from the extrusion. Highly recommend for ending the problems with the chrome-like stuff.

Here's a pic taken about 3 weeks ago when I dropped her off for the panel replacements at JC.

As an alternative thought, when I was peeling off the moulding from the 2007 Bambi, I used a piece of 1” aluminum to assist with scraping the adhesive off. It was 1/8” thick. The piece I was using was about 16” long but Ace hardware sells it in 6’ lengths. So I got the idea to try it as an alternative to the plastic moulding, and used 1” 3M double sided tape. It looked great and would never age out like plastic. I ended up removing it and using the plastic moulding since I had already purchased it, but the next time I will go with the aluminum strip. I took a picture that I will post tomorrow.

Reviving an old thread. I read somewhere on the forum that Precision Trim has gone out of business....and that is true. However, there is an employee who spun off from them 11 years ago and started "Color Trim Plastics". (256-659-2455) They don't have a website, but do have a Facebook presence. I called and talked with the owner (super helpful guy) and they do have some alternatives to the Precision Trim product I bought back in 2014. Same color, but some different profiles. They work through distributors, but will drop ship directly to your address.
The 9 year old trim I replaced has sun faded on the side that sun bakes on my home parking pad and I have to reseal the lower floor level rivet line under the extruded aluminum belt, so time for a complete re-do.
EDIT: The owner's name is Randy, and he is usually the one who picks up the phone.

I used products from these folks: http://www.trim-gard.com/wheelwellmoldings.html
Excellent quality and good service. BTW, I used black... looks very tasteful.

I tried a different path, not wanting to replace it all for hundreds of dollars. I used Flex Glue (like the tv commercial, bought it at Lowe’s) to fix any loose trim. I used a wire brush to remove the peeling foil, then masked the area with painters tape and newspaper. Painted the trim with rustoleum Chrome paint. It looks new again, and $20 instead of hundreds
