Restoring Emblems

I have a Classic emblem on each side of my 2004 with paint that is very faded/oxidized. It is a thin metal emblem that seems to be glued to the aluminum skin, so it would be hard to take off without damaging the skin/clear-coat.

Has anyone tried to restore one of these? I am thinking of trying to polish one first (fine paint polish and a Dremel after masking it off). If that does not work, maybe try painting it. I would appreciate hearing from any of you that have tried to do this.

Thanks.

Removal can be done pretty easily. Use a heat gun to soften the adhesive and with a piece of medium strength fishing line slowly slip it behind and pull it through. OR a plastic putty knife would also work. I just did the AIRSTREAM letters on the front and back end caps on my trailer and they came off pretty easy. There are some very good double faced tapes available to put it back on.

Thanks Roger. Good way of removal.

Unless I hear from someone else first, I think I will try polishing in place first. If needed, I will then try your removal method.

I have a 2009 Classic and just took wax and rub it out. Look like new. Now I wax the blue background each time I wax the trailer

Welcome Aboard!! 👍

Polish in place...I used Griot's One step before taking this photo. I used a Porter Cable orbital but it's very doable by hand and microfiber.

Unfortunately, the polishing did not help improve the look. I plan on taking two of the emblems off to repaint them.

I'm about to do the same on my Classic. I'm curious about what color blue paint to buy. I have a friend with an auto/body business who's going to paint them but I need to tell him what color.

Studio rendering solvent based markers work fabulous! The oxidized enamel soaks up the color like a sponge!

I went to Autozone, touch-up paint section, and bought colors that looked close. Never removed the badges, just very fine steel wool, masked everything, and used the little brush for 2 or 3 coats. Worked fine!

We used the Dupli-Color Ford blue from Autozone for ours. Matched well. Good luck

Sherwin Williams sample paint in a little container , they’ll match colors of choice. I used fine arts paint brush. Looked great and brand new!

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the information! With new ones nearly $300 each fixing the old ones makes the most sense. I appreciate all your help!
