Question Plasticoat vs. Clearcoat spray...??

Hi,
Have seen & read the earlier posts about repairing "spots" w/ the clearcoat spray that AS dealers sell.
Which is better; the AS spray, or Plasticoat?
Where is Plasticoat available?
Have a few spots or areas that need some attention.

Clearcoat

AS dealers sell spray cans of clearcoat, for bigger sizes you will probably have to contact a AS repair facility/dealer, comes in gallon size. I have instructions if you need them let me know and I will email them to you.

When plasticoat peels off, it has lost it's ability to bond to the metal. The reason is that the plasticoat is dead, therefore it becomes very brittle.
When the touch up plasticoat is used on those spots, it will usually crinkle the edges of the remaining plasticoat.
Unfortunately, the bottom line is that patching or spot painting with plasticoat will not renew the old aged out material.
Patches are exactly that and will usually, very clearly, show. But it is a good way to protect that area from oxidizing, until a complete refinish can done. Painting over any aged out paint, will not resurrect it.

thanks Andy. Good advice as usual. I have some really small spots on the roof where bird droppings I guess, got the coat to wear off. The former owner was not as consiencious as I am when it comes to cleaning that "crap" off. I also keep a very good wax coat on mine which this past year had kept it shiny and hopefully protected somewhat from the elements. Wish I had a big garage!!

Big Garage

Alan,

For about $150 your wish can come true. It's at Costco. And it's a tent. 20' long 12' wide and 10' high. I have extended the height on mine be using 2" PVC pipe on the legs. It's not the most perment solution (I replace mine about every year) and it is only 20' long so one end of my trailer sticks out. However, it is cheaper than $15000 and goes up lots faster than a garage. With no permits!

So I have had a 2017 25FB for 12 months, first owner, under the 3 year warranty. There are a couple of spots that are peeling, my question is this normal? Being under warranty what is the course of action to repair these? Panel replacement or is the acrylic spray paint what would be expected?
Any comments would be appreciated.

Welcome Aboard....👍

Take plenty of photo's and raise polite cane with JC.
Call & write, keep all correspondence.
Settle for nothing less than panel replacement.

Good Luck

What you are stating is a warranty claim. The vehicle has an issue I have zero experience with warranty claims for an Airstream. But I worked for a major US vehicle manufacture and the first step was to take it to the dealership. Hopefully the selling dealership.

Taking up the warranty with our Dealer on the street side was the first thing we did. Sent photos and the brought in for examination, that panel, through the help of the dealership, they decided to replace. The panel on the curb side Airstream warranty department refused to replace and said that is was damaged. After conversations with JC they are recommending that the spots should be buffed and spray painted. To me this is a temporary fix for much older Airstream to buy time before a refurbishment of the entire exterior. Any input would be helpful?
Also, is the Plasicoat on these fragile, $100K rig with a potential problems?
