Paint for water heater cover

Just purchased a Girard on demand water heater after realizing none of the water heater manufacturers offer a brushed aluminum door to match airstream finish. The door I have is "Polar White". What is the preferred method to paint to match the exterior? I was thinking I could try spray paint first, and if that looks bad, get quotes from an automobile paint shop.

If spray paint can work, what is the preferred brand/color? Should a clear coat be applied on top of the paint?

Thanks. There does not seem to be much information out there on this topic.

Rustoleum

I used this with good results.
https://www.rustoleum.com/product-ca...c-spray-paint/
Fairly soft (typical for rattle can paint) but looks good after a year as long as you don't scratch it.

Titanium Silver I suppose (vs satin nickel)? That still looks pretty good. I don't have a polished exterior but I think I am overthinking this whole thing. I think I'm just going to pick one from home depot and see what happens.

There is a paint called Liquid Stainless Steel. Never used it, but it sounds good.

I used liquid stainless steel on door hinges and battery bx surrounds a few years ago - they were badly corroded.

I still have quite a bit left in brush form, plus a small spray can, and have been thinking about trying in on the appliance covers that do need painting. Not sure if heat might be a problem though.

It comes with a clear coat, and was meant to convert kitchen appliances to "stainless" look.

Before using it on the AS, I asked them if it was ok for outdoor use and they said it would be ok -it has been for several years.

Go to an automotive store and buy a can of high temperature paint in whatever color you want.

Paint

I used VHT spray paint on my previous AS. I picked it up at the local autoparts store. It comes in various temperature ranges and blended well with the AS.

Titanium silver. Mine has held up well with no noticeable effect from the heat.

Krylon "Dull Aluminum" #1403 is what I used on my Fridge vent door on my Avion. Not sure how it would hold up to heat though.

I used the Rustolem on my water heater cover and it's worked out fine for a full season.

When I upgraded my water heater it came with a white door. I scuffed the white and spray painted four light coats of rust oleum spray paint. Aluminum was the color and I did not use high heat nor a clear coat. It matched the exterior almost perfectly with less than a half shade off. It has been on, successfully without any change, for five years now.

Personally, I would not get in too much of a tizzy about high temp paint. Yes, I used it, but plenty of others have eschewed its use. And they're still alive and posting.

Great match. I use this to spot repair the skin where I've fixed filiform areas.

Great tip, thanks, I will try this on my covers next month when we get down south!

Also interested to try with filiform repairs, I have tried several paints and never found a close match, so I have just been scraping off the corrosion and then using clear coat on its own.

Also interested to try with filiform repairs, I have tried several paints and never found a close math so I have just been scraping off the corrosion and using clear coat on its own - doesn't look the greatest but better than the whitish filiform.

Only other thing I did was use a little sandpaper to scuff up the cover so the paint sticks better and less peel chance. Also clean of any oils and you should not have any issues

Brian, here is a little info on what I do with the skin filiform.. match is not perfect, but much better than the corrosion unless a small area.
