Excella (1989 - 29') Blue Center Stripe

Have completed the ghastly task of removing all of the old blue vinyl and adhesive. Had to manually sand the entire area to remove the "iron like" dried adhesive. WHEW!!

Now the Re-do question(s) - Paint or New Vinyl???

Vinyl:
If I re-apply vinyl I do not wish to pay the going price for the mother ship's blue with silver pinstripe new vinyl. A solid color is fine with me. I am re-painting all of the emblems at the same time (so, would need a matching paint). So, other options, colors, sources, installation tips, etc.

Paint:
Leaning toward this option in a dark blue (but open to other color suggestions). Do I use a latex or oil based paint (somewhere I read to never use oil bases paints on aluminum - or I perhaps dreamt that) Brush or rattle cans? Proper prep? Primer required?

Any and all suggestions, tips, etc are greatly appreciated.

I stripped the old decal off and rattle can painted a Sovereign that I had. I used aluminum primer paint, then dark blue, let it dry, masked off the top and bottom with wide delicate surface frog tape (yellow) and painted the center lighter blue. I sanded, buffed and painted the emblems also; no need to mask them - just spray, wipe the raised letters lightly with mineral spirits, let dry and sand/ buff polish a little more. A little bit of work, but only cost about $35.

Or you can make your own stripe, I used 6" light blue, and 1" dark blue automotive striping tape.

Two cans of each - primer, dark blue, light blue plus the tape. I used the 1.88" wide tape to mask the top and bottom.

Frog Tape

I bought the 1.41732” (36mm) Frog Tape. On its way from England!
So, my middle light blue stripe will be a bit wider than yours, but will still work.
Thanks for your bountiful help!!

Color of Blue

Great job on the blue stripe. We have an 89 Excella 25' and are in the same predicament. We got the old stripe off and trying to figure out what we want to do now. Do you happen to know the exact color of the stripe (particularly the light blue part)?

Sorry for dragging this thread out of the archives. I'm getting ready to paint a new center stripe (black) on my '88 Limited. What kind of primer did ya'll use? Self etching? I have a paint sprayer, but can't find rustoleum aluminum primer in something other than a spray can. I don't want to use a latex based primer.

Thanks!
