Damage from Power Awnings?

I recently took delivery of a 2022 International. I notice that there are two areas of possible damage on the silver “band” running around the AS in those areas that are right where the power awnings collapse/stow.

Not to create a question about the finicky nature of the power awnings, are others seeing similar spots where the power awnings retract? If this is very very common, I may not make any warranty claim as the awnings seem to otherwise be working fine and I generally am a subscriber to “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” If this is abnormal, I don’t want this to get any worse.

Sorry the images are rotated.

Actually, if you click on them, then it opens in the correct orientation.

Welcome Aboard...👍

You can be sure that if it continues it will ware right thru the very thin "plastic chrome" cover on the molding. I wouldn't try cleaning it or rubbing it too hard you may remove it completely.

Hi

Take a look at how the arms come in as they "stow"..... They should not get very close at all to that strip.

In the stowed position, this is what it looks like. Are you all saying it shouldn’t be that close? I would think it *would* hug snuggly to the side so that it isn’t bent/caught by wind during travel.

No no they should not be so close that they rub.
Can you take a front & side photo of the arm & lower mounts? Is the molding fastened down completely?
There may be a way to shim them out a bit or re-fasten the molding.

There is a black rubber cylinder in the arm bracket that keeps the awning arm from touching the camper body and trim. Yours looks almost completely flat - it shouldn't be like that. I know bc I just took my awning apart and mine are more round (oval actually). Nots sure why yours are so compressed but they should be more egg shaped when the awning is in. Also, it appears that your awning arm may not be totally vertical - maybe its the photo angle or something. I believe it should be straight up and down.

Ok..it may be possible to space them out a bit. If they are attached like our manual ones are.

I had to space our lower mounts out and re-plumb them because the awning wasn't rolling up straight. I replaced the self tapping phillips head with stainless ST bolts.

It appears yours screw into a rib and may be attached the same way.
A 1/4" thick piece of composite under the mount plate should be enough.
The thinner the better.

Thoughts on putting a piece of black rubber weatherstripping as a short term fix?

Edit: Weather stripping going between arm and the plastic chrome. Not to replace the big O.

Same rubbing issue

We had the same rubbing issue with our 2018 Globetrotter. We used 1/2" square silicon pads to prevent further damage. 3 years later, no issues!

Hi

The awning will go it to the point that the upper cover mates with the roller. If that brings the arm into contact with the rub strip, there's not anything you can do about that. Something will continue to contact there. Replacing the strip is just going to get you the same issue the next time the awning goes in.

The shorter the trailer, the more curved the body will be at the awning arms. With a longer trailer, there is plenty of space between the arms and the body. This may be a "that's the way it is" issue. A call to JC would be the next step. There may be a different arm that should be on there ... who knows ...

Good call. I just emailed Airstream. They’ve been rather responsive to me via email so far on other questions. I sent them some of these same pictures.
