Clearcoat is off. Now what?

I removed the clearcoat from my '85 Sovereign and it's a great improvement. I do not want to polish it but like it as it was when it rolled off the line. My question is can I wax the raw aluminum as is or do I need to prep the metal first? Someone mentioned wiping it down with a vinegar/water solution first. Advice please?

Hello from Colorado: I stripped the clear coat on my 86 Limited 34'. Like you, the improvement in appearance was nice. I think Airstream applied the clear coat to help keep the trailer nice looking, and reduce corrosion. Without it we get water spots and stains. I like the polymer type auto waxes as they tend not to haze up as much. Our you can spend lots of time polishing the thing. But the corrosion will continue.

Well, vinegar is an acid. A very mild acid but, personally, I would not put it on my Airstream — no telling what, if any, effect it may have on the various sealants and gaskets.

I would just put a nice coat of wax on it. People rave about the Griot’s products but I used plain old Turtle Wax on my previous trailer (an ‘86 Sovereign) and it held up pretty well.
