Clearcoat breakdown, roof, 1986 Excella

With the exception of the roof, our exterior clearcoat is in excellent condition (usual # of small dings and scrapes > 26 years). The roof, aside from UV exposure and often being parked under a maple tree, has deteriorated and darkened...appears to be Meliola mangiferae, aka black mildew (think discolored bathtub grout). The affected area, most of which is hardly noticeable at street level, has no leaks, per se, but looks pretty shabby.

My question is as follows, should I paint the affected area ? I don't want it white for reflective benefit, but rather a color to match the balance of the trailer, without the need to strip everything and embark on a total restoration.

Several years ago, at the terraport in JC, an owner of a 1989 A/S motorhome had painted his entire unit, except for the distinctive trim elements, with a Mercedes-Benz paint, Iridium Silver, and from a distance of 5' it appeared as true as the original aluminum surface.
  • does this seem feasible ?
  • would you strip the area prior to painting ?
  • spray on or roll-on (to avoid overspray to vents and a/c unit)?
  • would a paint formulated for steel surface, adhere to aluminum?

Thanks for weighing in. Our 1st visit to the forum since 4Aug2009, it has always been helpful.
