Black Letters and Badges

just wondering if anyone had done the black letters and badges on a 70s?
We. Are thinking on removing them and have them powder coated, but now we are. Debating between the blue letters and colored badges or going black.
For some reason the black on a polished AS appears very classy...
Anyone out there has done this right?

Yes.
I had the letters powder coated silver on my 72. The powder coater had a lot of problems with them and didn't like how they looked, so he didn't charge me. He said the pot metal was off gassing and ruining the finish.
I had the letters powdercoated anthracite on a customer's '69. This was done at High Point powdercoating in Liberty Hill, TX. He also had a hard time getting a good finish and told me he'd never do another set
That looked great when he was finished with them.

Great minds think alike

I LOVE the "black on shiny" look. I'm going black on everything. I've coated my wraps with black truck bed liner. Black rub rail and trim inserts. Black and polished on all the letters and emblems. Clear coat over everything.

Thrilled so far.

Thanks Top!
I know that we saw this done before but can't find any pics here, you wouldn't have any pictures handy from any of the projects that you mentioned?
Now wonder if I should get them powder coated or just got with some POR 15 TopCoat...any inputs?

I just used rustoleum black, and clear. I did my International badges in black and chrome rustoleum, however, I did not let it cure long enough before the clear, and it turned the chrome to gray. I think I'm going to hit it again with the chrome, and wont clear that part this time. The gray doesnt look bad- I just think the chrome looked better.

I can take some pics of the badges tomorrow so you can see that look.

Here's a few angles of my International badges. The gray was what I painted chrome. I cleared it too soon and this is what it turned. Its not terrible, but I liked the chrome better.

I wasn't thinking about the chrome option though....

Now I'm debating between grey or chrome.... What an existential crisis !!!😄

Hey bud- I did not use POR15 on the emblems or letters.

First thing I did was sand everything down on the HF belt sander: Combination 4" x 36" Belt / 6" Disc Sander

The sanding was fairly aggressive on some of this stuff to get it down to even, new metal. The letters were easy- just push them straight down on the belt and the edges shine right up. I did not sand the whole thing- just the edge that faces out. I kept them oriented the same way so the sanding marks make it look brushed.

The Land Yacht and Overlander badges weren't too bad either, but they did have some low spots that took some finesse to get the corrosion off in those areas. To keep it flat was just taking off too much metal and the letters were getting more and more shallow. I did use the angled attachment o on the disc sander and put a nice bevel on the perimeter.

The International badges were the hardest because mine were all warped. There was no way to just press it face down like I did with the letters. I tried to eyeball it and keep it flat to carefully sand off all the old pitted chrome plating.

Next was paint the black. I just used Rustoleum rattle can: Professional High Performance Enamel Spray Product Page

On the letters and International badges I sprayed the whole thing, then re-sanded after a couple days of curing to re- expose the trim. For the Land Yacht and Overlander, I sprayed the black into the lid and applied with a brush, then re-sanded flush.

All pieces were clear coated with Rustoleum Clear.

The Chrome is from an Auto parts store: Paint & Accessories | Aerosol Paint | Dupli-Color® Automotive Metallic Coating Chrome 11 Oz. Aerosol - CS101 - Pkg Qty 6 | B659054 - GlobalIndustrial.com

Enamel?
Hmmmmm😏
I was originally thinking on getting some and going with the HVLP gun, but then I was thinking about the durability factor.
In theory POR15 top cote should be UV resistant....and since I will be doing spray foam insulation, once the letters and badges are back in place I'M NOT DOING THIS AGAIN....😁

Well,
After a lot of consideration I just dropped the international badges for powder coating, so let's see when they come back how would they look like.
Currently working on the letters based on Mixter's input...
will report results soon...
