My DW has a great shortcut:

Sum = 2 (2^{20-1}) - .01

Because in the parens, you're calculating the value of the last term in the geometric series (5242.88 see below) and when you multiply that by 2 (10,485.76) and subtract the value of the first term (.01) you get the sum 10,485.75.

That calculation in the parens is saying 2 for doubling effect raised to the power of the number of terms in the series minus 1 (or, 20-1 for the 19th power).
